FirmBark the issue with volumetric video is the playback format and converting all that image data accurately to a preformant playable representation. There have been some attempts for porn and the field has seen a lot of research improvements lately like gaussian splatting etc. that convert all this image data to a volumetric "video" better and more efficient. It's on a bit of a technical turning point I'd say. Similar to the oculus dev kit days for vr.
However, playing back high quality volumetric video that actually looks like, let's say a good 4k vr video, requires quite a bit of processing power which is challenging on a pc and I don't think possible yet on a mobile device like quest (for now). So currently the performance and the conversion to the volumetric format are still pretty big bottle necks. So, quality is getting to a sorta acceptable point but it's very far from an 8k video still.
Also, you gotta realize, the techniques to make these videos guesstimate a lot of stuff to make the 3d data and textures. In practice this can mean that stuff that was not captured by the cameras is often not accurate (between legs when standing etc.), or for example a dildo merging with a girls pussy. Stuff like that. There are also some other challenges too. For instance. I'm not sure how feasible POV would be at the moment (due to what is obscured from the camera).
Still, having seen videos like that. It's definitely something completely different then vr180. It has huge potential and feels far more immersive. The 3d space perfectly aligns with the pass-through which alone is an awesome improvement. But of course your able to move around in a video like that too. Exciting times really.
It feels like now could be a good time for some early experiments. Research in this field is going fast and the quality of the content produced will improve with it. Can't wait for high quality volumetrics in the future.
