kimura9988 My take is you should never starve 8k with a below 90mbps encode bitrate. Can you notice on a Quest 2? Not at all. Quest 3? Yes, some. Apple Vision Pro? Hell yes.
Need high bitrates for future proofing. However, the problem is if youre looking at an original 8k cam source, it's going to have noise in mid and background, the PQ will be mediocre regardless of high bitrate (because the camera and source resolution itself is a bottleneck). Using Topaz on an already high bitrate 8K source removes noise and jaggies but generally also strips detail - I've tried it myself on their best models.
Conclusion: we need 16k camera, with high bitrate. 16k files should be posted if available along with 8k. But even downscaling a high bitrate 16k video to 8k so its playable on 2025 headsets is still going to look leagues better than original 8K filmed content. This downsampled improvement is apparent already on AVP samples of that 16K camera. I hope SLR moves to 16K exclusively in the next year and through time and economies of scale tha 16K camera halves or less in price to $12k for some medium studios to consider.
