Hi guys, we passed on a quick fix for the grey screen you were seeing. This should make it work properly
Apple Vision Pro Fail
Kieshi @doublevr Thanks Kieshi. The picture does work now rather than the grey screen, but the next issue is that it seems you can only use 1080p, so the picture is very low quality. You can click on higher qualities, and when you do that, you get the graphic pop up to show the higher quality picture is loading, but then it just goes back to 1080.
Some other observations along the lines of Vision Pro's usability for this so-called Spacial Computing concept. IMO, it's a train wreck for anything besides watching 3D content. As a software developer for 18 years, working from home for the past 8 years, I sit in an Aeron chair, at an ultra-wide 38" curved monitor, with my MacBook screen displaying Slack to my left, and a TKL backlit mechanical keyboard. I prefer a wireless Logitech mouse. I have gel/rubber wrist-wrests for both the keyboard and mouse. I'm so comfortable that I can pull 18 hour flight-to-Australia programming shifts without even realizing. It's a carefully cultivated development studio environment. Bringing the Vision Pro into here has been an absolute failure. VisionOS is so not ready for prime-time. It's the most buggy Apple product I've ever used, and were it not for the breathtaking hi-res 3D content on these amazing uOLED screens, I would definitely be returning it. Basically, it's got one use for me, VR pron. Let's hope we get some quality player apps.
Kieshi Thanks. Works at 1920 max. When are higher resolutions going to work?
On that note, should AVP users download h.264 or h.265 files?

avpOrbust H265. Always. Even on older headsets like the quest 2.
Does the higher lens quality of vision pro boost the image clarity at all? I mean it's all still 5k to 8k videos at max so is there any difference between quest 3 and vision pro in these videos when you watching.
hottea Never used any of the Meta headsets so can't compare to that, but even at 1920, the AVP is pretty good. No screendoor effect at all.

Anyone with an AVP interested in checking out these spatial porn videos?
https://dianaanddamien.com/vr/
Please let me know how they compare to standard VR porn. I've been reading a lot of conflicting opinions about spatial videos. Some people say spatial videos are just apple marketing
words for standard 3d video, and some say they appear more immersive. If true, vr porn will be next level on the avp.
Garyindiana2 yes, we are aware of this and are working on making it work with higher resolutions

rabbit_bird Hi! Apple's spatial videos are interesting. Strictly speaking, it looks like these videos are captured at 30 FPS using 2200x2200 resolution with an FOV of 71.5 deg. That resolution is better than it sounds because it's projected onto a narrow FOV. When you toggle the immersive mode, that narrow FOV allows Apple to blend in the pass-through environment, which may be why some people "say they appear more immersive." The SBS files offered for comparison have been converted to the SBS format with 30 FPS using 3840x1920 resolution. That doesn't seem right to me. I think the resolution of the SBS should be 4400x2200. However, a typical SBS video player is going to stretch that 71.5 deg. FOV to 180 degrees, and it doesn't look good. Overall, I don't think you can compare "Shot on Vision Pro" to the jaw dropping 60 fps / 8192x4096 / 180 deg SBS productions available from the modern studios.

GfLm I've been reading lots of review on Reddit from people hyping the spatial videos, claiming it makes them feel emotional and feeling they are reliving the moment. I guess these people are new to VR and have never seen an 8k 3d SLR video before. However, even the 8k 3d SLR videos don't provide the sense of emotion or reliving the moment, which makes me wonder whether the high resolution and OLED screen of the AVP, and viewing the video in a narrow POV blended in with the high quality real world passthrough is what provides this effect. Either way I intend to purchase one purely for watching porn and movies. Unfortunately I live in Europe will have to wait until later this year but I've never been more hyped and cannot wait for this to arrive.
rabbit_bird Apple has a lot of work to do on the Vision Pro (AVP). See MKBHD's latest YT for example. At the moment, we're just barely able to watch VR porn on the AVP.
I'm copying the large VR files to the AVP. Then, I'm using the free Moon Player for playback (slightly less bad compared to the paid Reality Player). The nicest thing you can say about both of these apps is they are "working prototypes". And that's really all we needed them to be for now. I have faith that, given time, world class developers will bring advanced video players to the Vision Pro.
Anyway, that Moon Player handles frame rates better, but randomly crashes during playback, and leaves an annoying overlay in the immersive space. You can move the overlay around, out of the way, but the funny thing is that the overlay acts as the spatial audio reference point. So wherever you move it, that's where the spatial audio sounds like it's coming from. It's pretty obvious these developer(s) have no idea (yet) what they are doing.
As far as "the sense of emotion or reliving the moment," I would say that playing back your own VR recordings is quite literally the only way you can relive the moment. You can't really relive the moment if you didn't experience it in the first place. If we talk instead, about the quality of immersion when viewing state-of-the-art professionally produced 7K-8K 3D porn videos, then I'm blown away by the difference between my old Quest Pro and the AVP.
It must be said that a lot of the content on SLR isn't state-of-the-art. Cameras keep getting better, and the production quality of some studios is way better. I've been loving the latest content from a studio that no longer publishes on SLR. I won't advertise for them here on SLR's forum, but they produce immersive hardcore BDSM. When their shots go in for a close up, my eyes don't see anything but the performer, and (now that I'm comfortable wearing the AVP) my brain stops translating and I'm in the moment and it's beautiful.
Glad to hear you're enjoying it so far. I cannot wait to get my hands on one of these.
rabbit_bird I don't know how actually spatial video looks like, but when I watch reviews and they show it off I just don't get it, a 2d 3d square video with blurr or not around the video? I'm watching just thinking wouldn't vr 180 video be better? Idk
I still haven't seen spatial video in the quest 3 yet. They say samples are coming.
GfLm any chance you’d be able to post (or otherwise send) one of the videos you were able to convert to be able to play in high quality on AVP? That method you figured out is far beyond my level of tech knowledge and would really like to see how it looks in high quality. Stuck on 1080p over here!
Did anyone already try to start DeoVR via ALVR? I read that ALVR is starting to get really good.

Garyindiana2 It turns out a lot of the original files, available on the downloads tab of each video in SLR (see figure below), are not encoded with the "hev1" codec/tag. For example, see Best Massage Ever Pt.1.
I can share some more thoughts on this, hopefully it's not too technical. These original files are larger because they use a higher bitrate, and in some cases, the studios are still using an older Apple friendly h.264 codec (instead of the newer h.265 codec). The newer h.265 is often Apple friendly, just not when using the "hev1" variant. Apple devices like the "hvc1" tag. For streaming, SLR re-encodes everything to the most advanced compression, but this isn't necessary if you have a fast connection, and are downloading to watch on the Vision Pro. Note that the video I linked above isn't even 7k or 8k, but nevertheless when watching on the Vision Pro, the quality is stunning.
Figure: Downloads tab with original h.264 download highlighted
What I've found is that the original files for studios that publish up to and including 7k, see for example SinsVR, are usually fine without needing to be remuxed. In other words, the original files are not encoded with "hev1". However, it looks like the trend with most 8k publications is to use the "hev1" codec, so don't be surprised if you have trouble with some of the 8k downloads.
GfLm Great info. Is it just the 8K videos where this is an issue? Having the "hev1" codec.
avpOrbust Unfortunately, no. I have found that the 7k videos from some studios are using the "hev1" encoding. It's silly that Apple doesn't support hev1. Apparently, there's an explanation from Apple for why they think "hvc1" is better than "hev1" somewhere in the Apple developer documentation. As someone else already stated here, it's usually up to the player app to handle as many codecs as possible. Everything SLR re-encodes to h.265 seems to use the "hev1" encoding. They've talked about how much re-encoding they do here on the forums. Lower bitrates, highest compression, best streaming experience, etc.
