  • AV1 Is Now Live on SexLikeReal!

This just seems like another push to force streaming to me. AV1 offers better compression, and with image quality and resolution improving, the already low 30Mbps bitrate cap is even more limiting. Which will lead to download quality getting inferior to streaming quality especially with the upcoming 16K Black magic cam.

The original file was the way to get around that low bitrate but now SLR takes it away and pretends paying for every video separately is a viable solution for something YOU ALREADY PAID FOR IN YOUR SUBSCRIPTION. It's absolutely ridiculous to me that you should pay for another type of encoding. New codecs are just part of the natural evolution of digital media not a feature let alone a reason to pay 5+ per scene?!

Honestly, it's really starting to get old. I used to be a huge SLR fan due to them introducing lots of scripts, later AI scripts, passthrough, and delivering the best content for the longest time. But really, it seems like every month or so SLR seems hell bent on pisses me off nowadays. It's getting really hard to defend you really.

Why can't you just serve to the needs of your customers instead of trying to force people in some vision of what a customer should be like? I really hope SLR will get back to it's roots as I think you're really alienating your customer base with all these changes nobody wants like forcing people to use Deo VR even if they want another player, constantly attacking and restricting downloads, removing the public API, limiting script downloads, focussing on 2D, making features streaming only, etc., etc.

Like really, I know this probably will be ignored but please just get back to doing things like you did in the past and stop limiting what people actually want all time. You're really just pissing people off this way.

2D VR is really just a bad idea. I mean I still have my own selection of 2d vids from the time VR wasn't a thing and I have a directory of the best 2D porn I've come across over the years. I watched it recently on my AVP with Moonplayer which can convert them via "realtime 3D". It kinda looks nice, but that's about it. If you have a choice between the hottest 2D porn, with some 3d-ish conversion or really natively shot high quality VR, of course one chooses to watch the latter. 2d just can't compete. And even though I have this directory of my favs 2d porn, in those few circumstances that I want to watch 2d porn I always find myself using one of the free websites out there, just because they have an awesome selection of porn too and it's just always available and easy to pull up. Out of respect for SLR I won't name those websites here but there are some really GREAT ones out there and they're completely free (well apart from the ads of course). I just dont see how SLR wants to compete with that.

It just doesn't make any sense, I don't believe it will return any income to SLR and it WILL eat resources. Just stop all that crap and focus on the core business, the reason that we're here: high quality SLR VR originals.

harigeharry flat costs us nothing. Like no additional cost at all.

It's a separate thing that we are bridging smartphones as users have to get on web before they get into vr. There's no direct path into vr.

We already got the first 1,000 flat videos and i really like it. We start seeing traction with the best titles yet to come. Gets you busy both in vr and smartphone. Getting many more flat as there's abundance of it produced.

We have impressive 2025 pipeline as we got all star tech team and tapping into product and business now.

Bear with us and you will get many more just like all the other things we innovated that no one believed. We are dead serious getting spatial media like no one else.

Also I agree on evolution happening in many ways. There are new users coming to us every day that know nothing about VR and expect us to deliver the best experience.

Streaming ot downloads is like all-in-one headsets to wired, around 90/10.

You guys are fighting the losing battle.

Premium now needs to be renamed 2nd class. PPV is such a poor value I can't see many bothering with that.

But what is the technical difference between the AV1 stream file and the download file? Is there one? Because the stream encoding is nothing impressive. It's not an upgrade.

Is there literally ANY baseline to a lifetime membership? Seems the only thing of which you're assured with a lifetime membership is a neat little username and password. So for now, downloads are being eliminated as part of the membership baseline. Because of the immense improvements and costs associated with a new codec. There is LITERALLY nothing preventing them from next eliminating free streaming as part of the baseline membership. Because, you know, new codec and all... Then, as I said, you are left with your neat little username and password.

This is really a sham and a scam being perpetrated on your paying members. People paid for their memberships with the knowledge they would have access to downloads as part of that membership. To eliminate those is literally the definition of bait and switch. But the tone of your posts has shown what you think of your paying members.

Plenty of new fish in the sea, right?

sportclimber I'm not sure the new encodings are even an upgrade. It seems like they are just using the nvidia hardware accelerated encoding av1_nvenc which has NEVER been known for good quality. Just good speed. I think the x265 encodings may have been better quality.

doublevr Streaming ot downloads is like all-in-one headsets to wired, around 90/10.

You guys are fighting the losing battle.

If there are so few people downloading, why kneecap us? It shouldn't make much difference to your budget to keep providing original quality downloads

If people want to pay for AV1 downloads they can go ahead, charge for the cutting edge stuff since it costs more resources to create

jommy Does it cost more resources? I doubt it does. The AV1 encodes are using the built in encoding on nvidia cards. I'm pretty sure that's less taxing than what they had been doing. And that's the insensitive they have for the change. It's not an upgrade for users, it's a more efficient process for them.

If you were software encoding AV then yes that would be taxing. But using the built in hardware encoder on an nvidia card? No I don't think so.

My theory is that they likely sold quite a few lifetime subs aka the people invested in High Quality Original Downloads. Now that source of revenue has dried up and PPV is the only way to make that demographic keep paying more.

"It just doesn't make any sense, I don't believe it will return any income to SLR and it WILL eat resources. Just stop all that crap and focus on the core business, the reason that we're here: high quality SLR VR originals."

Many a businesses have died due to Hubris and not listening to their core audience, pray it doesn't happen to SLR.

petex67 Well I do think highly of @doublevr, I believe that if a decision turns out the wrong way, he'll see it in time and reverse it before any real damage is done. I strongly doubt his 2D decision though but enough has been said about it, we'll just have to see how it goes.

You simply cannot offer a lifetime subscription, take features away, and then charge extra for them. No sensible person considers this acceptable. If you want to take away original downloads for new subscriptions going forward, then, while I still don't like that, it's at least not taking away something someone already paid for. Active subscriptions should retain the ability to download original quality, at least until the next renewal date (for non-lifetime subscriptions).

                    harigeharry

If the high quality SLR videos continue and continue to improve then to me even though I am not a 2D VR fan I will glady except the trade off.

Right now the SLR videos are getting super sharp tothe point that non PT still look pretty darn good processed as AI PT. The colors are deeper and crisper.

For me the name of the game is total immersion and they are pushing forwards again towards this and not backwards.

PaulBlart Thing is, if you bought a subscription a month ago you thought you were paying for HBR files. Then they take those away and give you 'free' flat video's instead, something you're absolutely not interested in. How is that even fair?

harigeharry transcoded 8K downloads used by majoring of users are there all the way.
Things have to change. PPV will be also coming with AI script where available
Should be a nice upgrade for those who are into it.

                        harigeharry

I hear you. Ill let DoubleVR or someone else respond to that aspect of it but as far as creating the ultimate immersive videos at least recently it has been more steps forward than backwards..

                        sportclimber

So for now, downloads are being eliminated as part of the membership baseline. Because of the immense improvements and costs associated with a new codec.

I've read somewhere that companies distributing video content using AVC and HEVC codecs have to pay royalties to MPEG LA.

AV1 was developed by Alliance for Open Media (Google, Netflix, Amazon, etc,) to be royalty free alternative to HEVC.

I would assume using AV1 would lower the costs, instead of increasing it.
