  • SLR choppy unusable streaming performance

When streaming video in DeoVr (current release version) it will perfectly for a short time and then begin freezing and stuttering to an unusable degree. Playing local files works fine (tested after streaming performance tanks) so it appears to be an issue with streaming. I've tried connecting to a VPN (nordvpn), tried reinstalling and verifying files, and resetting my network all to no avail. on 1gig fiber connection, speed test code: 257196 (no vpn connected) and 257197 (VPN connected)

happy to provide any other information to help get this solved. Been going on for a week or so, did not seem to coincide with the latest update or any changes to my pc.

CraveDastry What headset are you using? I can't use SLR with steam because of it being choppy. It gets worse the longer you try to use it.

      Hi there!

Thank you for providing detailed information about the issue you're experiencing with streaming in DeoVR. Since local files are working fine, and you've already tried a VPN and network reset, it does seem like the issue may be related to streaming specifically.

Here are a few additional things you can try:

Clear Cache in DeoVR: Sometimes cached data can cause performance issues.
Lower Video Resolution: Try reducing the resolution to see if the stuttering improves.
Check Your Router's QoS Settings: Ensure your router isn't throttling streaming services.
Direct Ethernet Connection: If you're using Wi-Fi, try switching to a direct Ethernet connection.

Since the issue persists even with a 1Gb fiber connection, please let us know if this happens consistently on all streaming content or specific videos.

Feel free to share any other details, and we’ll do our best to help resolve this for you.

Make sure you're on 5G instead of 4G. That was my problem, I only now realize my 4G connects at 72mbps which will result in choppy playblack. Switched to 5G and it's fine now. Duh.

Same problems. Almost unusable for over a week. Obviously has nothing to do with my streaming / internet. I had one error message pop up yesterday that said the SLR app was out of memory - just before it crashed for the 10th time.

I might get a video to play once or twice - but then the jitters and crashes start, even after restarting the headset.

Telling people to “clear their cache” isn’t super helpful when you don’t tell them how.

JangoSLR > Direct Ethernet Connection: If you're using Wi-Fi, try switching to a direct Ethernet connection.

Is this some kind of canned AI bot response? Tell me how I’m supposed to connect to an Ethernet cable on my headset? I’d love you to breakdown this “support” and explain how this is remotely useful. We’ll wait.

Do you people actually test the issues people report?

diwanga Tell me how I’m supposed to connect to an Ethernet cable on my headset?

Probably referring exclusively to PCVR (headset connected directly to PC, then PC on ethernet).

              diwanga tell them how

Yup, making people hunt around for it isn't helpful.
He's maybe referring to Deo VR Settings >> Privacy >> Clear browser cache on exit

diwanga We’re currently in the process of completely restructuring our support to make it better and more efficient for you. I’m still new to the team, and while I’m doing my best, I may make mistakes from time to time.
Please accept my apologies, and I promise I’ll keep improving to provide you with better service in the future. 🤗

diwanga Well the best way is to make an exclusive 5G wifi SSID in your house (don't share the same SSID with 2.4G) and connect to that. Look up your modem/router manual on how to do that. If you're connected to 2.4G you're most likely connected at 72mbps, which will result in about 50-55 mbps effective max which WILL cause stuttering on higher mbps files like the SLR originals. That's what's happened to me. I then noticed that when I connected to 5G, it actually connects at 200 mbps and things were suddenly working well.

Of course your problem might be a different one but first thing to do is to make sure you're connected to an exclusive 5G SSID.

Tried clearing the cache, no effect.
Lowering the video resolution is unacceptable as a solution, I pay a yearly membership to stream at the highest quality available and I have the hardwire and internet connection to support it.
              Router is not throttling
              Already on 1gbps ethernet.

issue occurs across all videos, doesn't seem to be tied to any specific video.

                CraveDastry

Thank you very much for providing the information. I’ve informed the team, and we hope to resolve the issue as soon as possible. If I have any updates or ETA, I’ll get back to you.

CraveDastry What is your set-up by the way? Since you say that you are connected to ethernet, it seems you are not using DeoVR on a headset like Quest 2/3.

@CraveDastry Probably already verified, but can you check the video is playing using H265 encoding and not 264?
It might be hard to troubleshoot. Your headset (bigscreen beyond) is not super common, and most folks here won't be familiar with it. It might help to get an idea of your overall hardware setup.
It sounds like you're using a PC connection to play the content. Can you provide details on your PC specs?

                1. GPU specs.
                2. Does your machine have multiple GPU's (especially dedicated card + integrated gpu)?
                3. While running a video, what does the GPU utilization look like in performance monitor?
                4. While running a video, CPU utilization of DeoVR and the orchestrator process (ex SteamVR or what you are using instead).
                5. Type of cable you are using for connecting to your PC. If USB, check the usb port version that you are plugging into. Also note if you are using any hubs/adapters.

Maybe try saving the video (max quality) to your PC and play it from there in DeoVR (using a windows share). If that still stutters, try playing the video in 2d on the PC. This could be useful in helping you to find out what the problem is, because this obviously is a problem on your end in your setup somewhere.

                    1. 4090
                    2. single gpu, HMD is plugged into that, deovr worked has worked for months flawlessly with current setup
                    3. GPU/CPU utilization is normal in system monitor
                    4. in SteamVR (bigscreen beyond is a native SteamVr device) I do get frame spikes once the stuttering issue begins in Deovr and the frame rate monitor in DeoVr oscillates wildly
                    5. HMD is displayport and 2x USB 3.0s both USB's are plugged in mobo 3.0 ports. Notably I can play high end PCVR without issue so I don't think I'm experiencing a system wide performance issue, it seems to be limited to deovr specifically and once the streaming video begins freezing the issue persists
