LordCrash haven’t seen the edit yet, I’m hoping they got the sci-fi to real life transition right, as well as the “pointing” gag.

Kay Lovely was shot before River Lynn, so yea less lights than we had for our recent Ava Sinclaire shoot; we lit Ava up like a Christmas tree so shadows shouldn’t be much of an issue.

Overall, did Kay’s the writer’s room feel “real”? That’s one of the things I liked about the River Lynn edit, it felt like watching a memory ala “Strange Days”, “Anon”, or “Being John Malkovich.”

I’ve been attempting “realism” since I saw Nash & Redstar’s “Witcher” parody; yes it was dark, but it felt like an authentic space and doing something close to that appealed to me. They’re professional film makers, so trying to emulate that has been a stressfully exciting endeavor for a layman.

When lighting people in a “normal “ space, ive been particular about catch lights in the eyes as that’s your main focus for most of the shots so anything ”off” about them breaks immersion. I’ve been trying to stay away from tube lighting as it gives a very distinct catch light that isn’t often found in most people’s environment; I’ve all but abandoned ring lights as the catch light is so distinct it becomes distracting.

Tube lights are nice in that you can get it closer to subject with a lower profile than a soft box, meaning it’s easier to keep out of the shot; soft box has to be about 3-6ft behind subject as we film 220 fov, vs tube lights which can be placed on camera arm or directly behind male talent in POV shots. With mixed lighting solutions, you can ensure that every part of the performer is illuminated, but, I believe, the catch light will still break immersion if the lights don’t make logical sense for the environment.

Nowadays I’m not sure what I want to shoot. I think 2020 had a lot of fun stuff with multicam, waifu simulator graphics, as well as using lighting to distinguish “real vs. hyper real” (we did it in ‘Making it up to you’ spa area vs carport, Lily Lou ‘Busted pt2,’ parts of this Kay Lovely scene, etc.). 2021 was about trying to make the “real” look real more, so I’m thinking we’ll try to tackle the “hyper-real” more in 2022.

There’s a lot of cool details in VR erotica that I want to expand on, such as integrating more soundscapes, like “Making it up to you” and our Haley Spades scene, as well as more visually stimulating experiences. 2022 should by fun, thank you for watching and commenting!

      Don't get me wrong, like I said, I don't want or expect clinical white light for each and every scene. "Atmospheric lighting" (maybe a better term) is nice when done very well. The Haley Spades scene mentioned above or POVR's recent Christmas scene with Anny Aurora are imho good examples of such a really good execution of atmospheric lighting.

      My main issue with the recent release are the shadows on (important) parts of the female's body. Imho that's simply something that should be avoided in general in VR porn. If you con't care about them, good for you, but that doesn't mean that they made the scene better in any way, so there's not reason that they exist (from a viewer's perspective).

      I know that photographers always strive for a realistic lighting but realism imho isn't the most important thing in VR porn by a far stretch. We're not talking about mainstream non-adult movies here but about porn. Being able to see the girls perfectly is the first and most important task for every porn photographer imho. There's imho this false "trend" in VR porn to become as realistic as possible but that's a dangerous path since you're selling dreams and fantasies and not reality. Truth is that reality is often pretty disappointing and bleak for many people, especially in terms of sexual activities and experiences. Hell, many people only have sex in complete darkness, so much for reality...

      So yeah, I value the will to experiment and to find new cool ways of shooting stuff and to put the beautiful girls in the right light, in the truest sense of the word. But there are some basics that shouldn't be forgotten on the way, like not casting shadows on the girl, especially not on penetration and not for a longer time. That's at least my take on it.

      And by the way, I'm a die-hard Witcher fan (like really hardcore) but the Witcher scene on SLRO never really made it for me, partially due to the very dark lighting (and I don't like cheap cosplay stuff in general). 😉

            Totally agree with this. Porn is primarily a visual medium and if there are shadows stopping you from seeing the girl clearly it detracts from the whole experience in a big way. Focal points like the face, boobs and penetration need to be well lit.

                    LordCrash great write up and I think I get where you’re coming from regarding shadows obscuring the body; it’s not so much the atmosphere, but the inability to appreciate the body within the atmosphere. I’ll be more conscious of it going forward!
