metichemsi I think the 12k (at least on paper) is interesting due to: better lenses, even better vertical fov, better resolution, better colors, eye tracking (I think players will do parallax correction (like HereSphere) based on what you are actually looking at in the future, which will be an important improvement).
I'm aslo hoping that the next Gen of video cards will be able to decode 8k+ so we will start seeing 12k vids etc., but I agree, you will likely not get the most out of this device for the time that it is "cutting edge" in those key factors like resolution. We will likely see similar resolution appear once 12k becomes more widely available in porn.
As for the downsides, I agree that the passthrough will likely be crap and delayed a loooong time, the form factor of the 12k is also not ideal, the need for charging a battery sucks imo and I don't like the need for pimax software.
Like you, i think the biggest advantage of the somnium vr1 over the 12k will be the passthrough. I think this will be a game changer moving forward as it will only get better and better. I had a pico 4 in the past but hated the FOV. So I'm really looking forward to getring another headset with very good passthrough, good visuals and very decent FOV. Let's hope they will deliver. Still, I'm pretty optimistic at this point.
