On the one hand, Apple committing to VR is a big deal and could give a real boost to the industry.
On the other hand, I canβt see what it offers to make the general public buy it for $3,500 (about 10 Quest 2 headsets). I suppose not many people thought weβd all be buying Β£1,000 Apple phones a few years back either though.
If people donβt buy it, you then have Apple and Meta (two huuuuge companies) having a go at VR and not really getting too far. Is VR then dead in the water in terms of it becoming a mass market product? If Apple and Meta canβt make it work, who else is going to risk pumping a load of money into it? It could be another decade before anyone else takes a stab at it.
I know Meta have pretty much cornered the market in VR so theyβve been successful in that way but I donβt think itβs exploded as a whole like they hoped it would.
Will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Will Apple be the beginning of a brave new VR world and open the floodgates or the final nail in the coffin with VR staying a niche thing for the foreseeable future?
