Mutiny There's no question that obesity is a huge problem in society, but the idea of "body positivity" is just that no one should feel ashamed or "less-than" because of the body they inhabit.

Nobody and especially not me said that anyone should be ashamed of their body or for the matter what kind of body types they like.
Anyone obese might still be a very kind and likable person, actually some of the nicest people I know are overweight, and of course I still like them and enjoy their company.
But this makes not the fact that they are overweight in any way positive. They are likable and respected people, because body shape is not only thing that defines a human person. And every person on this planet has good and bad features, but this does not mean being overweight suddenly is a good feature.

You do not walk to an overweight friend and tell him/her, how glad you are how many kilos they have. You generally simply ignore it and talk about whatever are your common interests, the only thing you might say if the topic of body weight is unavoidable that you do not care.

To me it seems the "body positivity movement" started with good intentions that not anyone has to be thin like a spaghetti. Which generally was good, as lets face it there exists problems in the other direction as well, where people getting eating disorders because they wanna be spaghetti thin but their genes do not allow it.
But in todays world, while eating disorders of course should not be ignored, the other way is way more serious with extremely obese people being over 20% in some areas in this world and mildly overweight approaching 50%.

Now the "movement" has been taken over to make overweight as the new accepted "normal", and if you do not follow this you are just a bad person not accepting people how they are.

        That feels like a valid thing to me. We all get one ride on this rock, so if someone needs a coping mechanism to make it more pleasant, I say let 'em have it. (So long as it doesn't hurt others, which, I recognize is the struggle we're all having with this topic. Encouraging other people to do unhealthy things is not great.)

        It's clear from all your replies your concern is the health and well-being of others, and I fully respect that. I should have quoted you so I could clarify what I was responding to.

        This is the part that prompted my message, which was just to define what I mean when I use that word. Not as a euphemism, but as an attitude of kindness and positivity toward everyone, regardless of how they're shaped. (Same as I would for their skin color or who they love or what they do for a living.)

        I did mention the difference between "body positivity" and "fat acceptance" which is kind of the same thing but also not, because humans have a bad habit of drawing a circle around a group of people and saying "this is what they believe". Three people never agree on a pizza order, so how are 50,000 all supposed to believe exactly the same thing?

        In every big movement, there are people on one side who say "Yeah, maybe we should change this a little bit" and people on the other side who are like, "Let's burn the whole world down and start over" and many, many more people somewhere in between.

        If we draw a big circle around the "body positivity/fat acceptance" movement, there are people who are loudly PRO-FAT, and I do not agree with them. But there are people, like me, who just believe we should welcome fat people into our lives and enjoy them as humans (like you mentioned you do) without making them feel ashamed for the way they look. (And it's a beautiful thing to be supportive for someone who is ready to make a healthy change. But we can't push them into that. They have to be ready for their own reasons.)

        My position is just...Listen to people who live in a large body. See what their experience is like. Empathize with them. I think, if people do that, they'll want to step into that "body positivity" circle, and find their own place in it.

                                    It's a pretty weird thread though since I have the feeling that especially tiny girls with A-size tits feel bad or ashamed about their body in this industry. I hardly see naturally curvy models doing extensive surgery or lamenting about their bodies, but a lof of tiny girls who actually want to be a lot curvier than what nature provided them with.
