  • What factors break immersion

I want to flip the other post on its head. There are a lot of videos that make you feel completely immersed in the content, but what breaks it for you. That slap in the face by reality that this is a video.

For me its

  1. Hands.
    When it’s a closeup I’m into it especially 69 or face sitting style, then the stunt cock uses his hands and that’s it.

  2. Bad angle.
    I’ve noticed there are quite a few videos where the view is turned slightly to the right/left so it doesn’t feel like I’m looking down my body.

What about others?

    The big one for me personally has always been when the girl(s) clearly looks off camera for direction from whoever is shooting.

    Feel like this has gotten much better in the past year or two though, at least from most studios/creators (though some certainly still struggle with it). Know even before working for SLR when I was just a fan this was something I always appreciated with SLR Originals, since I very rarely ever noticed it happening with them.

    When the guys stomach and chest is in the shot and blocks you from seeing any penetration.
    When the guy is grunting really loud during sex.
    When the angle is really crooked and off center.
    When it's out of focus or too dark that it becomes very grainy and pixelated.
    When the girl says the guys name and it's not your name.
    When the girl pauses and looks off camera for direction.
    When the guy is getting really soft that his dick starts to bend while she rides it.
    When the camera gets bumped really bad and shakes.
    When the camera is shaking and moving during the action.
    When the girl speaks broken English on the intro and it makes no sense.
    When the intro seems rushed, and you're like that's it, that's the intro. "What are you doing here, lets have sex".
    When the intro starts with kissing or action that blocks the girls face. I like to see her face first to know what she looks like, and see if I'm even attracted to her first, so I skip ahead first to get an idea or think, did I skip the intro and then go back and realize, no that is the intro.
    When you can see the light stand or camera case equipment in the shot or on the table.

    More of a personal annoyance, when anything blocks the view of penetration. If I'm looking down at the penetration and I see the less attractive other pornstars head pop in front of my line of site, or her hand rubs the girls clit and it blocks the view, it basically blocks what I expect to see and causes me to look up or away or try to fix the angle.

    If the footage is too close and you can't see the penetration and it's off camera, I try to adjust or zoom out or end up just skipping ahead usually.

      When the girl is too far up in the air with the angle. When the positions change too dramatically from standing to lieing down. I don't know if there will ever be an easy solution for this outside of using DEOVR or Skybox app to adjust it. But each time you adjust it, it does ruin the immersive feeling some. It does make me wonder if certain studios have been actively working around this by cleverly shooting scenes that have all the same eye level shots and we didn't notice but rate them higher because of it. For example LethalHardcore shooting the girl riding it reverse cowgirl on a chair, but then she's laying on her back on the couch edge is around the same height compared to her laying on her back on a bed. So they figured out a way to keep it fairly level in angles and keep a more immersive experience and maybe that's why a lot of their content is rated higher. Just a thought to consider.

      What is not correctable however is when the position is wrong.

          I agree with the performer putting her pussy in your face. I think it should be done at the start of the scene if it's done and not in the middle. I always end up skipping past it if it's done in the middle, because by that point I'm already into the action and have seen better that it ruins the immersive experience. It makes you just want to get back to the action and skip ahead. I feel the same way about random blowjobs in the middle of scenes, I 99% of the time skip past them. If I could have it my way it would just be back to back action after the initial bj/intro stuff.

                  Oh, here's one that really bugs me: When in POV, the male actor continuously holds a prop between the camera and the female model(s).

                  This sometimes happens in a photography fantasy, where the male actor is pretending to take pictures or videos of the model, and holds the prop camera directly between us and the model. I'm super into photography fantasy videos, but the prop camera should be held lower than it would be in reality, so I can look down and see the camera there but also look forward and have an unimpeded view of the actress(es).

                  This also sometimes happens in fantasies involving paperwork - the male POV character has eviction paperwork, or a book they're trying to read, or exam results, whatever. Sometimes the female model will have wonderful legs and a short skirt, but I can't see her legs at all because the prop is being held continuously in the way, rather than held up briefly for storytelling purposes then lowered. It just makes it hard to leer as much as I'd like to. :-p

                      I think with the vag in the face closeup, the first few times you see it, it can be really nice, or if it's some new pornstar you are just discovering who hasn't been in a lot of scenes and is a fresh face. However not all pornstars have attractive looking vags. Or if there is a history where you've seen her a ton of scenes, the thought about eating out a pornstar could be kind of gross depending on who the pornstar is. Some have really pretty vaginas and they look like they haven't had sex with thousands of guys, others look like they have. It really comes down to skipping. I think any time you choose to skip ahead, push buttons, or just want out of it to skip ahead, that breaks immersion. I often will skip past a 5 minute vag closeup part and have skipped a lot of them rather than sit there with it close up in my face. I think the best solution is just to keep it more towards the start of the scene.

                      I was watching a WankzVR scene the other day and in the scene, you could see the entire camera crew and equipment in the reflection on the patio sliding door glass. I think that definitely breaks immersion as well. It didn't bother me as much but I kept looking at it to see what it was like on the set. I was more interested in that then the intro which I thought was pretty generic and boring. It was basically your cookie cutter, girl comes over, tells you why she's been wanting to have sex with you intros and then starts undressing for an all nude sex scene.

                      I went to read the comments on the video to see if anyone said anything about the reflection and I noticed nobody really complained about the reflection. Instead the biggest complaint was about how the BJ was in the middle of the scene. How it just started with sex right away and later on in the middle they did the BJ part. And their complaint was that there is a formula that most viewers expect and that is BJ then sex. For them they wanted to see the BJ first so they skipped ahead to it, then skipped back to the action. So it really bothered them that they had to go looking for it because I guess that was their warmup or expected intro.

                      And so I skipped ahead to see what they meant and they were right, no bj at all during the intro, was later inserted in the middle. I didn't really notice when watching originally because I usually always skip it if it's in the middle to get back to the action. I think if it's at the start, you are more likely to actually watch it and see how good the BJ is because it's the warm up part of the scene. But after you've already seen the sex and action, it's like dropping things down in pace. I think very few people are orgasming to a bj in the middle of a scene so you are basically ruining your pacing by having too much bj stuff in the middle. Also it's the same as pulling out. I don't like when sex is going really good and the guy pulls out. It breaks the pace and immersion for me because that is not something if I was in control would do in that moment because I am not about to orgasm yet. In my head I'm often thinking this is great, I want more of this and then they pull out and immersion is broken. But it usually means they switch positions and now it's not a position that is as good usually.

                      So the whole bj in the middle just drops the pace down for me and I usually skip ahead.                       I think it's one of those things that you don't really mind if you see it cause you can just skip past it. But I think if you are skipping past stuff, that breaks immersion. If you look at how many times you probably skip past bjs in the middle of scenes to get back to action, it's probably a lot. If it's done really really well you may watch it but that's usually not the case in most instances. It's pretty generic. So I also don't mind, but if I had a choice of a middle of the scene bj and leaving it mostly all at the start and getting more action in the rest, I'd choose more action footage. I also feel like a lot of great positions are cut short. They get a really good angle and they don't keep it long enough for you to enjoy it. The girl is in a great position and she then shifts it to another and you're like damn, that was a good angle and position. And then you get more bj in the middle and you're like, skip ahead. So if you're getting bj in the middle, it's kind of lazy filming I think because they could push to get more action instead that actually is 100x hotter but are giving you some transition filler instead.

                        Also this is really what people mean by wanting more hardcore VR scenes. One of the biggest complaints I read by DVD porn viewers, is that VR porn isn't hardcore enough and fast paced enough compared to what they are used to with DVD porn. It's because VR porn is showing all the inbetween pulling out, bj moments in a slow real to life pace. In a Manuel Ferrara type DVD scene, it's sex in bursts with fast pounding, then it usually goes to the next position in fast paced burst thrusts, and then the next. The only reason he can do that is cause they let him do his bursts until he's about to orgasm and then switch to the next position. He obviously pulls out and has slow bj probably moments as well, but they usually edit that out unless it's a fast paced hardcore bj. Also the average DVD scene might be 15-30 minutes whereas a VR scene might be an hour or longer. So they are forced to pack in the best of the best action and it ends up making it appear more hardcore I think because of that.

                        So by trimming a lot of that out, the pulling out, the girl adjusting and moving to the side to get into a bj ready position, then starting it, sometimes with it going on for 1 to even 5 minutes of in the middle bj stuff, all that slow paced stuff, you would have more hardcore VR scenes as well because it would be more back to back action and better pacing.

                        I think people that are complaining that it's not hardcore enough are likely skipping through scenes a lot more often as well and that is breaking immersion for them. They are looking to either get back to some fast paced action or find it. If you show too many in the middle bj moments you basically start losing some people I think because there are so many scenes to watch that a lot of videos are only getting so many skip throughs. I might skip through a scene only so many times before going to the next.

                        If I skip ahead in a scene and it's bj, then I skip ahead again and it's bj, and then I skip ahead and it's another bj, I'm like man this scene is slow and sucks or feels like a bj only scene. I might scrub around to find some action but usually by then I've sort of given up on the idea of downloading the scene because it feels like it's lacking enough action to want to keep it. So I go to the next scene. So you got to remember that your scene favorite rating and download rates are going to be based on how skip throughs are landing.

                        I think with SLR and the DEOVR app it's not as bad because of the scenes that have the built in markers. I often will just click to jump to certain markers like cowgirl/reverse cowgirl/doggystyle/etc. But if I am viewing the scene without DEOVR anywhere else, this is more of a factor that breaks immersion for me. I think that is the benefit of a studio being on SLR, people are probably more likely to give your scenes a chance with the markers. A lot of this is more towards viewing the video on other platforms or using other apps or if I don't use the markers and am just randomly skipping around to see what the scene has in it.

                        If a lot are landing on slow paced bjs, chances are people will not give your scene as much of a chance. There are some that I scrub through more slowly to see more, but there are a lot of scenes that I barely give a chance to because I don't expect much from them so I give them a few skip throughs to see if there is anything maybe good in the scene. So it's not just about breaking immersion, I think it could hurt your viewing/download rates as well if you got 5-10 in the middle bj moments where I skip ahead and seem to keep landing on all of them.

                        As someone with a clothing fetish who likes to see girls in cute outfits that are left on during sex: stocking, fishnets, skirts, tights, flight attendant uniforms, schoolgirl outfits, cheerleader outfits, softball outfits, etc. In my opinion after a while you'll start noticing that it's just another all nude scene with the girl where she takes off the outfit, and they all sort of run together. I've seen so many complaint comments on VR videos of people saying they wish the girl would have left the outfit on during the sex or at least during some of it. One person said on a comment that she looked incredible in her dress and you removed it and that was a horrible director decision and I completely agree with that. The moment that happens, it breaks immersion for me because it's like you took something away that I liked a lot.

                        Another good example of this is where the girl is wearing reading glasses and looks really cute and smart in them and you have her remove it during the sex. It's the one thing that made your scene different and made it worth being an extra favorite or download and you took it away. It just really bothers me when I see that happen and breaks immersion because in my head I'm thinking, why couldn't she have just left them on. You took away something that I really liked and was enjoying. It was something different than all the other scenes out there. There are so many requests with smart/nerdy girls in reading glasses and you could have been one but you had to go and ruin it.

                        If she looks amazing wearing something, why are you taking it off them? Just so you can make the all nude people happy? How about the people that want to see her wearing it during sex. How many all nude scenes does she need for those people. Give us clothing fetish fans something occasionally too.

                        It's like how many all nude scenes of the same girl do you want to download where she's in all the same positions. It just doesn't stand out and you've pretty much seen it already multiple times. It's just her 20th all nude scene. I like all nude scenes too, but after a while seeing another one, you better hope you got some solid action or it's going to be a pass for a lot of people I think who have seen it already. So I think the better approach is to try to stand out with an outfit.

                        So seeing her doing all nude again, you're like, I'm sort of tired of seeing this girl in another all nude scene so I skip it to find something more fresh. If you match that with your generic intro of her coming over to confess she wants to have sex with me, I'm like I've seen this scene before so many times now and have it downloaded already a few times.

                        So for me, all nude scenes of very common pornstars can often break immersion for me in that they make me want to skip them. I think eventually with some stars you need to do a lot more for me to want to see them. A good example of this is the upcoming Jennifer White scene. Some people are really excited for this scene but for me I am not. Because I've already seen probably 100+ of her scenes before on DVD over the years where I've had some favorites. But I don't go back and watch those favorites anymore and they are some of the best of the best. I've seen her in just about every outfit and tons of all nude scenes. You'd have to do something really unique for me to be interested at this point. I could be wrong and it has a lot more in it and it's great but my initial thought is that I likely won't download it. So I think if you're going to shoot with a pornstar that has a massive catalogue of scenes, you really need to be creative and try 10x harder to make a scene that really stands out with her. Party because the bar has already been raised in past scenes. So now you're competing against that back catalogue for favorites and downloads. You'll need something a lot of those other scenes don't have or will need to figure out how to combine the best of multiple scenes into one.

                        There are some pornstars with 15+ VR scenes that I feel that way about. After so many you're like yes she's really hot, but I just can't watch another scene that is like the rest. Once I start feeling like it's going to be like something I've already seen multiple times, it breaks immersion for me and I'm ready to skip ahead to see if there is anything fresh done in it, if not I usually move on to the next scene with another pornstar that I haven't seen in as many things. I think that is why you see a lot of people saying they want to see more new pornstars and fresh faces. It's not just because of the variety in faces, it's that a lot of the studios are all shooting things the same way with similar intros and all nude scenes.

                        Especially since a lot of VR file sizes are 15-50gigs. For someone to download it and have it take up so much space, the demands are higher that it's not like all the rest of the scenes they've already seen or downloaded for that pornstar. I think if you choose to do the same easy intro and all nude positions, it's likely not going to do as well unless you happen to be one of the first few people to shoot with the girl in VR. Right now I'd download just about anything from Megan Marx for example, cause I only got 1 VR scene with her and the outfit was ok in it and could have been 10x better, but I already got a lot of Melody Marks and Sybil scenes downloaded for example that my standards are going to be higher to want to watch their next VR scene or download it. So there will be a lot more that can break immersion for me in their scenes or make me want to skip around or skip out of the scene because each skip ahead I'm like I've seen this, I've seen this, I have a scene that has this in it that is better, and I exit out. I think Melody Marks is probably one of the most beautiful pornstars doing porn, but I think if you're going to shoot with her, you really need to go watch her scenes to see where the bar has been set and assume most people have already downloaded her best scenes and probably have close to 100gb of VR scenes of her, maybe more. So you really have to be able to try to top those, so the bar is set higher for some pornstars that already have a great catalogue of scenes.

                        Just sharing real feedback that nobody mentions but I think a lot of people think about.

                        Plenty of 2d porn scenes have multiple bj moments scattered throughout the scene. That’s not the reason people are complaining about a lack of hardcore action. Yes, the example you seem to be talking about is a full on lengthy blowjob and you don’t want that breaking up the scene. Having a minute or so when you pull out to change positions is normal though. How many times have you heard girls say “I want to taste my ass” or the like in 2d porn and a very quick bj then ensues before the next position.

                        I think the lack of hardcore action is somewhat down to the limitations of VR but also down to it being very story-based and those stories being very often about couples having sex. You don’t get a lot of gonzo VR porn where it’s just two pornstars fucking for fun. Nor do you get a ton of scenes where you’re fucking some slutty stranger you picked up in a bar or a hooker. It’s usually you and your virtual girlfriend making sweet lurve and those loving intimate scenes, where she looks lovingly into you eyes, seems to be what a lot of VR pornland wants to see.

                        In 2d porn we’re used to seeing porn girls almost trying to outdo each other in how extreme they are. DP’s, double and even triple anal, gagging (even puking) deepthroat face fucking, piss drinking, choking, face slapping, fisting. It’s all on the menu. All of that is doable in VR, even with it’s limited movement. They obviously just feel that it’s traditionally not what people want to see in this medium.

                        I think, for a long time VR was the province of wealthy, lonely white tech nerds who just wanted girlfriend simulations. Your standard desensitised porn addicts who moved past that stuff a long time ago weren’t here. The Quest 2 and PlayStation has changed that to a degree as it’s affordable and doesn’t require expensive super powerful computers. More ordinary porn fans are coming over and we’re used to seeing, at the very least, tons of anal sex and gonzo porn. Some of the other stuff is still very niche, even in 2d porn, but there are a lot of fairly big name stars who have now done golden shower scenes on onlyfans, clip sites or indie porn sites.

                        I personally have always liked a story with my porn so I don’t want VR to lose that. I’d just like more of the stories not to revolve around couples. You don’t have to be super imaginative, the old porn tropes still work, poolboy, pizza delivery guy, mechanic who fixes the girls car but she can’t afford to pay, teacher who gives out grades for sex etc. Those stories give greater scope for harder scenes as you’re not supposed to be in love with the other person. You’re having sex with someone slutty enough to offer sex for payment. Not that some couples don’t have crazy sex, of course they do, just not in VR stories!

                        I think it will take time for things to change but I definitely feel we’ve had more anal scenes this year so far from the bigger VR sites. Smaller sites like Realjam and Sinsvr have also really started to release anal scenes very regularly. Hopefully we will start to get more hardcore scenes as time goes on.
