This is only true to a point. For those unable to stream SLRO 200deg scenes that will only play properly in one of the two proprietary players (DEO or SLR), well sounds like the official position is that they’re soon to be shit out of luck. Either stream, or put up with horribly distorted playback in one of the players that does support DLNA. It’s a very disappointing turn of direction from this team, and I sincerely hope there will be calm reconsideration.
When I’m at my primary residence I can, and do, stream without much issue 90% of the time. On occasions when my Internet is down or something else prevents reliable streaming, I still have plenty of other content from NA, CVR, etc. that plays via DLNA through Skybox player, so this is just a mild frustration. I will say it was nice having DEO as my one stop shop, and I truly feel for folks out there for whom streaming is always going to be a problem. I still hope that SLR can find it in them to maintain DLNA support.
blaze466 Streaming is their top priority and will always get the most attention so not sure what you are on about. Keeping DLNA doesn't affect their ability to innovate at all.

I want to point out that not all who dislike this change are 'ranters' and a number of very valid opinions have been shared here. I'm not saying this to be petty or antagonistic, I'm pointing it out because saying something like that can inadvertently poison the well. It can give people the impression that anyone responding after that comment is 'ranting' if they're against DLNA removal, therefore they should be ignored - this is not the case.
Hunky-Dory Why not just put in the Terms & Conditions that DNLA issues / problems are no longer supported by the customer service but keep it for people with the knowledge and know how to carry on using it as they want.

Hunky-Dory Please bear in mind, SLR have confirmed multiple times that downloads are not going anywhere. If that did happen, there would be a lot of explaining to do given recent promises, but to date there is no indication of downloads being removed. It would be unfair to still accuse them of having that plan without sufficient evidence.
Edit: great suggestion as a middle ground however, keep the functionality and say that it's unsupported. Could be the closest solution to satsifying everyone.

Please stop trying to downplay the issue of them removing DLNA when you have already said that you don't use it and the removal doesn't affect you. That's cool that you want to and can stream but not everyone is in the same boat.
I don't own a Quest 2 so legit sorry if this is a dumb question, but doesn't the Quest Link solve the DLNA issue through bypassing it entirely and allowing local playing of files? Or is that not how it functions or something?
I mean I get that it would tether the user when playing downloaded files, but is this how the Quest/Link operates? Or am I missing something super obvious (which is entirely possible tbh).
justsomedude101 I still happily use my Oculus Go and will do so as long as I possibly can. Quest is not the only headset impacted. As I’ve said I have other content I can watch when unable to stream, but I’m still very much for DLNA not being taken from us and Im imagining that stating in the terms and conditions that there will be no support going forward nicely solves the problem.

Hunky-Dory I have a total aversion to DLNA after what you folks did to this place. That's a total disgrace with all the assaults, conspiracies and bullshit you brought here.
We have a good practice working with people we disagree with, yet this shitshow got over the bottom. Everyone here is demotivated to even think fixing it. Congrats on your victory.

blaze466 I understand that you have concerns too but I think you are worrying mostly about nothing. Just look at the evidence. They are adding heaps of new features. The whole UI was just redesigned and they are working on OpenXR, improving quality and many other things too. They definitely aren't spending all day working on DLNA.
justsomedude101 Link needs a PC with a beefy graphics card and that is expensive but for DLNA you don't need a graphics card or even a PC

Which features are we talking about? If how this has been handled was applied to a different feature we actually use and enjoy, or even need, I doubt we'd be very happy at all. It's easy to say we'd accept it until it actually happens to us.
The reason why I'm watching with interest is this - how this feature is dealt with should be a good indicator of how future inconvenient features are dealt with. What happens when one of the features you or I make use of, or rely on, is deemed to no longer be in keeping with the 'company vision'? As customers, are we even able to accurately describe that vision, without simply saying 'streaming and pushing new technologies', or a more verbose version of that? What new technologies are we talking about? Is that enough for us to buy into to the point that we're happy for this feature to be removed and others left unable to use the service they paid for? We can't very well expect those people to move house for the sake of a better connection, solely for VR porn!
I also enjoy the degree to which SLR push new technology, even though I don't stream - but I'm also aware that a constant push to develop new technologies means increased incentive to remove certain existing ones due to resource concerns, and there may not be a 1:1 replacement for those existing features. DLNA is a prime example. Internet streaming is clearly not a 1:1 replacement for DLNA, as it doesn't provide for those without sufficient internet connection, which counts for a lot of people. Internet infrastructure is years away from allowing SLR streaming to be a 1:1 replacement for these people. The near universal condemnation of this decision across multiple online platforms suggests that many could be affected. Not to mention that no matter how advanced streaming gets, it will never be as robust as a local solution.
My thinking is that it's unfair for me to be encouraging the removal of a feature that doesn't directly affect me and is so important to others, in the hope (not certainty) that SLR or DEO VR may introduce new features that I might like. Also, one day a feature that I use all the time may be on the chopping block. That's why I think it's a good idea to give those who need DLNA to use SLR a fair crack of the whip.
I'm not sure which features this impacts. Are there some headsets that only work with DLNA?

Well, that's the reason right there. People - especially young people - want to work only in big companies nowadays. They pay more and your job is safer even if it's a crap job with little to no autonomy. Also you have to work less hours etc. Getting people for a small IT company which requires some dedication and a few compromises in terms of payment and working hours but offers a great deal more autonomy etc. is kind of a nightmare. I work there, it's really bad.
i am not sure what DLNA is and what it affects.
i know i ended up downloading 100 clips the last few months with the deleting of content...will it affect the abilty to play the downloaded clips? some from SLR and few from other websites. also have some downloaded clips from other sites
will this make it so those downloads are no good anymore?
should I just delete them?
to watch them...i just connect the headset wire to the laptop and SEND the file to the headset where it resides until i swap it out for another file
still on quest 1...maybe a month away from quest 2

spanker You’re fine; your downloaded files are fine. DLNA is a protocol that allows you to set up a server host, either directly on your desktop or laptop, or on a NAS device. Players that support the protocol can then stream movie files from that host to the player on your headset via your local network. It’s a very convenient way to access a library of downloaded content without having to store it directly on the headset, which has limited storage space. It’s a wonderful solution for headsets like the Go or Quest models. When streaming is unavailable, or I’m in the mood to view content I can’t get on SLR I simply switch to Network > DLNA Host, and I can browse my entire 24 TB collection.
If SLR removes DLNA support, I can still easily access my library using Skybox or Pigasus, but then no chance to watch downloaded SLRO content because those files only play undistorted in the DEO or SLR players. So if I’m unable to stream from the Internet I have to enjoy other content via another player. As I’ve said above, this is only a minor inconvenience for me; nothing to kick or scream about but I still hope the DLNA support remains — perhaps as unsupported functionality as spelled out in new terms of service, which I think is an excellent compromise if we can get a reasonable dialogue restored here.
As to your original question, if your process remains side loading content straight to your device, you won’t be impacted, however once you’ve discovered local streaming via DLNA or a similar protocol, there’s really no going back and I absolutely recommend doing so for non-SLRO content via Skybox or Pigasus if support does go away.
