Hey guys. DLNA is being removed for the better.
We can't have this back and forth all the time especially if things get out of hands by angry folks.
SLR won't support DLNA or XBVR promotions. The same like it will be inappropriate to post jailbreak guidelines on Oculus forum

I’ll probably post this same comment in a few of the relevant threads, but:
I think it’s important to remember that @doublevr, the SLR team and especially the dev team who work on the app have been pushing the limits of what VR porn can be in one way or another for years.
As a lover of VR content myself and a member of most sites at one point or another over the years: I have never encountered a single site that comes even remotely close to the experience offered by SLR + the app.
Or for those who enjoy interactive content, again - no one in my experience is even close to what is offered by the SLR app, by any metric. Ease of use, content quality, amount of content, upload frequency, accepting requests, showing you how to create content yourself and offering you the chance to earn money doing it, etc.
Even something simple like the communication that so many on the SLR team have here in the forums/reddit/etc. Many sites don’t even bother to have actual discussions or interact with the community, but we’re constantly asking for input, scene and casting ideas, and literally asking for direct feedback on the app.
And I’m not even going to get into the 15k+ scenes from 100+ different studios, the support SLR has offered startup content creators, the SLR Originals series, etc.
I’m honestly not trying to just promo SLR here, but I am trying to point out that the SLR team has always been and continues to be at the leading edge of pushing everything related to the VR experience to its absolute mind-blowing limits, and I think it can be easy to miss or overlook that when passions run high.

That was pretty much what I was getting at though, carefully packed in between all the ass kissing I guess: SLR, having done all the things that I mentioned to push VR to all that it can potentially be, is saying that dlna is not a part of that vision for the future of VR, and that it actively hinders the ability to continue that progress & drive innovation.
And I guess my greater intent, even if it was done shittily, was to point out that maybe the company that pushed and innovated all of those things (among others) might have a pretty solid idea about what will further push and innovate VR.

justsomedude101 i cant see how removing a very useful feature and alienating the many customers who use it is driving innovation in vr... its the opposite. all we got from slr is extremely vague comments about how its not part of their vision... no explanation or rationale given as to why removing it is a good thing. from a customers perspective i can only see negatives.

blaze466 yes, I think we all understood that. And a simple and very reasonable proposal was put forward; keep the functionality but broadcast that it will no longer officially be supported. So it has now been moved to experimental features. So why now the sudden crusade to completely kill this option of content consumption? I’ve got to say, it feels a lot like vindictiveness against a few commentators on this conversation that have been perceived as rude. Plenty of us though have put forward respectful and very well reasoned arguments why the functionality adds value. I’ve already said in a more recent thread on this that I’ve found my own workaround, so if this is the final decision, then so be it. I still can’t understand it though

He is, and it is not about DLNA or not, this is a business decision some may not like and some may not care.
But he is actively talk about alternative ways to watch videos other then their own app, including some long in depth guides that maybe took an hour to compose by the author.

Exaggerating on a VR forum and comparing people to dictators is not just insulting, it's silly. Especially when there are actual dictators doing very real and very terrible things in the world right now.

And this point is very important here. I won’t say that I’m happy about the decision that’s being made, but let’s please all try to maintain some perspective. There’s probably not a bigger example of a 1st-world problem than this DLNA one. Our energy is much better directed doing everything we can to help those that are fighting for things that are infinitely more important. Thanks for the reminder justsomedude101

It is just so sad to see that you turned from a company that you had the feeling actually listening to their customers to the complete opposite shutting down everything that does not go in the direction of their business decisions in just a few months.
They listen to us a lot. Just because there is one topic that they have determined is not worth their resources to continue, does not mean they don't listen to their customers.
It is not about them not investing resources in something they do not find it worth with, I actually partly agree, DLNA actually never has been a stable hassle free user experience, and while Apple is known for their own proprietary technologies, Google never would have developed Google Cast, if DLNA was any good, it is about...
Taking away features that are already there. I myself work in software development, and the number one rule is, never ever take away a feature from the customer you already shipped. There might be a business decision to not further support and develop a feature, which is totally fine. There is no reason to not keep the feature the way it already is, it does not need any more resources to keep a feature that is already developed the way it is.
The even worse thing is they try to actively shut down any conversation about anything to work around the fact they decided to not support said feature in the future.
Not supporting a feature in future is fine, although you obviously have to expect negative feedback from users actually using said feature that are happy with it.
What is not fine is removing a already developed and shipped feature from your app.
And what is even worse is actively trying to sabotage your community that tries to work around the fact that you just announced to remove said feature.
And no streaming is no "solution" to this at all, and SLR just recently just recently proved why, with removing a ton of videos because of whatever reason. This is the living prove streaming only as a technology is just bullshit, and nobody can guarantee you that you can access your content from today tomorrow. In this case it is even sources from outside that lead to this, and even if SLR themself are just as pissed off as the users, that does not help the customer a single bit.
The only thing that guarantees you to be able to access your content from today also tomorrow is to store it yourself in a DRM free way.

There are other players that support both DLNA and SMB in order to play downloaded content. The one that starts with Sky now does a decent job rendering the 200deg SLRO files too.
I’d say the only missing piece left then is playing Handy scripted scenes not available on SLR itself over a local network. I have a good many downloaded CVR scenes that only play back with script using DEO, and DLNA has always been the method to make that work as I’m pretty sure Internet streaming from CVR will not work with a Handy script. As an Oculus user I’m guessing side-loading the scenes I’m interested in alongside the script files would still work. Yes, it’s a bit of a hassle, but as I said above these are very much 1st-world problems. It’s undignified to keep raising a fuss over this now. The dead horse is fully beaten.
