  • 6K stuttering/dropping frames on 1080ti

howdydoody Yeah you should not be having issues with that setup. Is it when you're trying to play h265 (aka HEVC) files?

I'm assuming so since that's usually the case, so if you haven't done the below already you'll likely need to
1.) go to the Microsoft Store and download the HEVC codec. Used to be free though now it costs $0.99, but just search reddit and a link to a second free version has been posted a few times on r/oculusnsfw
2.) likely need to make sure you have the k-lite codec pack installed

The above are specifically for helping to smoothly play h265 files (which is what virtually any 6k video will be). If you do the above and are still having issues with stuttering, try another VR player (I'm assuming you're using Deo). For example HereSphere is a solid player with a free demo version available on Steam, among a number of other free ones you could try.

    double checked and I have the "HEVC Video extensions" from MS but not the "HEVC Video Extension Codec" from "Yellow Elephant Productions"
    I don't have k-lite installed. I'll try the h.264 versions and if that makes a difference i'll try around with these other codecs for h.265

      Yeah, try the k-lite codec: https://codecguide.com/download_kl.htm. You can probably get away with playing h264 files without either of the above, but you really shouldn't have to sacrifice the quality/size difference than h265 provides with your hardware, so hopefully the codecs do the trick.

        howdydoody May I ask which player(s) have have this issue? Just SLR/DeoVR or also others? Which VR driver? (SteamVR, WMR, Oculus, other?

            howdydoody Can you check the advanced SteamVR settings for something called Smoothing and disable it?

                Rakly3 no change. although im starting to suspect the frame-drops/stuttering is studio related. I'm still trying to isolate the problem videos

                    howdydoody Which files are you using? The original (large) ones? MKV MOV?
                    Can you try playing the videos you have issues with in Movies & TV app on Windows?
                    Right click the video, Open with > Movies & TV.
                    Do you have these issues here?

                        howdydoody Look through Rakly3's post first, but have you tried turning the toggle in the menu for Direct Show "on" (I believe it defaults to off)?

                        I know for a few studios some of their videos won't play correctly for me unless I turn on DirectShow in the menu. VREdging comes to mind with their full size "original" videos.

                              direct show never worked for me in deovr. it just blacks out and nothing plays.
                              i have directx 12 and all seems fine with it everywhere else (dxdiag, games, etc)

                              all files i've tried are mp4s. i dont think i've noticed any mkvs/movs on this site.
                              playing in movies & tv is fine

                                  directshow started working after installing the k-lite codecs but it still drops frames. maybe even worse than with it disabled.

                                  howdydoody Oof. Ok, my last suggestion that I know has worked for some people before is to just uninstall and reinstall the HEVC codec from Microsoft, the one you confirmed you already have installed.

                                  If that doesn't do the trick then I'm fresh out of ideas at this point, but hopefully Rakly3 can help you out, sure he knows 100x as much as I do. But here's to hoping you get it sorted out my dude.

                                    Then it is very unlikely a missing codec issue. Close any video & VR apps you have running.
                                    Press the Windows key and type codec, this should bring up Codec Tweak Tool if you have k-Lite installed. Run it.

                                    Then
                                    Setting > Backup > Apply & Close and select a place to store it.
                                    Back to Settings > Reset > Apply and close.
                                    Check if the issue is fixed.

                                    If not, close any video & VR apps you have running again.
                                    Go back to the Codec Tweak Tool.
                                    Configuration > DirectShow Filters > LAV Video Decoder > Top right section.
                                    Make sure HEVC and H264 are both checked.
                                    Hardware Acceleration > Hardware Decoder to use > DXVA2 Copy-Back should be the default.
                                    Change DXVA2 Copy-Back to CUVID > Apply.
                                    Check if this fixed the issue.

                                    If still not, follow the previous steps again and try DXVA2 Native.

                                    Just in case, check the dropdown menu Hardware Device to use if there are any other listed than 2x your GTX1080Ti. If there is, select your 1080

                                    If you are still having issues, can you give me an overview of your monitors connected to your system? Resolutions, Refresh rates, how they are connected, HDMI, DP, any adapters used, etc? And the exact model of your graphics card. If you know the EAN code of the card that's even better!

                                      Video card is:
                                      EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti SC2 HYBRID GAMING, 11G-P4-6598-KR

                                      I have 2 monitors normally connected
                                      2560x1440 @ 165hz DP
                                      3840x2160 @ 60hz DP

                                      After you mentioned this, I disconnected the 4k monitor and
                                      reduced the 1440p to 60hz but no change.

                                      Also, this is a mostly new system. Everything is new except the video card, monitors and HMD Odyssey+
                                      and this problem was also still present on the old system.

                                      after more data collecting, the problems seem to be mostly wankzvr and czechvr 7K+
                                      I'm still trying to find one specifically from SLR (slr-encoded)

                                      I think after i first noticed this on the old system i just only targeted 4K version of everything and didnt try to localize the studios.

                                        howdydoody Then my best guess based on all the info is that you are using a HDMI 2.0 cable, not 2.1 (or a HDMI adapter)

                                        Here, this is for HDMI, not DP. 3.8.2 Refresh frequency limits for standard video. In the table, where it say 4:2:0 in yellow, you can also consider as 'yes' if the color code for that video is BT.709. (See screenshot below).

                                        Mind that it is still possible you'll have to disable a monitor or lower the settings. Even with a HDMI 2.1 cable.

                                        There still is one more caveat! These are 2:1 scale videos (VR) Not 16:9 (TV). So the resolutions can be a bit hit or miss with a 2.0 cable. for anything 'higher' than 4k60. I compared a couple original WankzVR files to the SLR re-encoded WankzVR ones and it agrees with your findings.

                                          howdydoody As much as I hate to admit it, the Quest 2 is the best all-round HMD. Ease of use, compatibility, support, capabilities, price.

                                          If mobility and price isn't a concern, then a Reverb G2 or PIMAX 5k/8k

                                          TLDR

                                          Some stuff to consider:

                                          1. Compatibility (Datasheet of your specific card)
                                            1. Display port 1.3 or newer for up to 8k60.
                                              Your card is DP 1.4
                                            2. HDMI 2.1 or newer for up to 8k60.
                                              Your card HDMI port is 2.0b and officially rated for 4k60, there's no guarantee which 5k videos will or won't work! Need that BT.709 for 5k60.
                                            3. The Quest uses a data link when tethered; USB3.0+
                                          2. Mobility
                                            1. Inside-out tracking vs satelite-tracking.
                                            2. Standalone or Tethered
                                          3. Does it come as a kit or need to buy more peripherals? (PIMAX)
                                          4. You pretty much have to go with LCD.
                                            Flickering very noticeable at 60Hz and 72Hz. Less color depth than OLED.
                                            The Reverb G2, PIMAX 5k+ and Quest 2 however all have striped RGB (less screendoor effect)
                                          5. Instead of comparing the resolutions of the displays between HMD, you have to compare PPD; Pixels Per Degree.
                                            Higher PPD = higher pixel density. Better image quality. Simply take the horizontal pixels for 1 eye and divide it by the FOV.
