abcrebel I lived in Japan for four years and still have many Japanese friends, and what's interesting is that they actually are the world's #1 producer and consumer of pornography. There's a funny thing in Japan, that's it's not the law that's important, it's more like the spirit of the law, and enforcing order.
Japan knows that their censorship laws are outdated, and very few people actually care about the topic. But change is a top-down thing in Japan, not bottom-up like we usually see in the west.
We also can't look at Japan in a vacuum. As far as East-Asian cultures go, it's actually pretty permissive and progressive. The same censorship laws apply in Korea (with even more restrictions, to be honest), and some other countries don't have professional industries to speak of.
