  • AV1 leaks + Originals Re-Mastering Thread

This shouldnt be that complicated, where exactly are download links for AV1 files for local playback? All the links at the top take me to two almost identical pages with different download links and neither of them specify AV1 for a download, all show h.265 what am i missing here?

    ok sounds good, i thought i was just crazy because even the sample clicks in the post above let you download them and one supposedly says its AV1 but its virtually the same size as the other clip, again by clips i dont mind the links to the videos but the clips they have embeded.

        Manny_S I did mention i downloaded that one and see that its AVI in the file but the size is virtually the same as the h.265????? I thought part of this process was to have the same or better quality at a small file size?

          How are we to know which vids have been remastered? Are you reposting them as new? Is there an AV1 tag?

          Original quality of the same frame and eye would've been better than putting different frames in one image

          I have them put on top of each other and turning the view of one on and off

          Color seems better on AV1 example image, but contrast (if that's the correct word) looks better on HEVC. There's black crush on the AV1 sample.. loss of detail in dark areas.. the door on the left, the bottles, the black light fixture, the dark area near the white lamp at the bottom of the stairs.. where ever it's dark, there's black crush.

            I tested the Master 200Mbps CBR two sample videos (AV1 and HEVC) using Pimax Crystal Light, and yes, I can assure, The AV1 is higher in quality (a little bit sharper) at "almost" the same bitrate which is around 122 Mbps for both sample videos.

            But I barely can catch the difference using Quest 3. I mean I can almost see that the AV1 is better and I was afraid it's just a placebo effect after using the Crystal Light. So I switched between the two many many times and finally I can see the difference in quality in favor of AV1, but it's barely noticeable as I said.

            And. Yes, the Colors are slightly better in the AV1 sample. But that can easily be achieved in the HEVC sample using better color grading. So, I didn't this affect my judgment between the two samples (I was looking for the "better/ sharper pixel" NOT the "best colored one").

            Couldn't locate if both videos are in Constant Bit Rate (CBR). But they are definitely NOT in 200 Mbps but in "around" 122 Mbps as I mentioned previously.

            My question is, did you guys do that on purpose because they are just "Sample" videos and the 200 Mbps CBR will be used in the upcoming (Master/ Original/ High Bitrate) videos?

                  metichemsi I believe this comparison was not about the smaller file size (same video quality at lower bitrate) but about showing the AV1 codec video quality advantages over HEVC (using the same bitrate for both) which in this case resulted in a similar file size for both.

                  On the other hand, if you look at the MediaInfo data, you'll notice that there's more to it. For example, using Full Color Range in AV1 vs. Limited in HEVC which add more complexity to do and more time to encode and more data to add, which results in a bigger file size of course.

                  Add to this the new techniques SLR is used like the improved color grading and better stitching...etc.... Yes, they are part of the Video post-processing, but remember they are still more data to add to the final file size as well.

                  My only issue with the whole comparison was not the file size because I understood what's going on and what's SLR's intensions, but with the 200Mbps target for the Original/ High bitrate upcoming video releases. Because these both samples are in about 122Mbps.

                  As I love the highest quality possible and to be as close as to Camera RAW files regardless of the video file size, I'm all with AV1 "EVEN IF" it was larger in size than HEVC with all these improving techniques to be honest.

                  In the end, I'm talking about the Original/ High bitrate videos. The whole situation could be way different for the streaming videos. And let's hope for the best for both video options.

                    doublevr My humble suggestions of what SLRO scenes should be remastered in AV1 and why (without repeating others suggestions). I put them in parts according to their resolution and codec type. Of course, assuming SLR still have the RAW files to encode them to Original/ High bitrate videos then re-encoding them for streaming purpose.

                    5K/ H.264 Original/ High bitrate Videos:

                    Reason to Remaster: These scenes are at 5K 5400x2700 which are really awful for current and upcoming VR Headsets. And the Originals/ High bitrate videos are exported from RAW to AVC/ H.264 which is unplayable using Hardware decoders like GPUs:

                    6K/ H.265 Original/ High bitrate Videos:

                    8K/ H.265 Original/ High bitrate Videos:

                    Despite using 8K 8000x4000 resolution, these scenes can be "fixed" when remastering as it's the only opportunity to do this using the RAW to AV1 encoding and Video post processing.

                    Reason to Remaster: Should add background music in the first part of the video when she was dancing, yes, I'm serious, dancing without any background music is beyond ridiculous:
