tinderbox4357 As you can see, the file sizes are much closer here, with AV1 being about 6% larger.
When I checked it out, I think the bitrate of the AV1 was a bit higher than in the HEVC, like 29 vs. 26.

Only tested the outdoor scene:
The av1 one doesnt work well on the Apple Vision pro, stutters extremely. I just googled, the AVP doesnt have an AV1 hardware decoder, damn Apple!!!
It definitely looks sharper though, best seen when looking at that tree, the quality is amazing.

So what you're saying is SLR's current quality level is too low
LOL. The SLR originals already have an amazing detail of course. I just did an A/B test with a screenshot, pausing at the same second, to make sure I wasn't seeing stuff that isn't there. But yeah the AV1 does seem to have some more details:
That being said, while paused at the same second they're most likely not paused at the same frame. To do the test correctly it's probably better to just view the images in VLC on the PC for example and do such test again while pausing at the exact same frame.
harigeharry Don't you notice the motion in the AV1 video to look less fluid?
You seem to be showing 2 different versions of a not detailed image. Different but not really better. If you want to make a comparison you need to choose things that are actually discernible.
onyxone Like said, the Apple Vision pro doesnt have an AV1 hardware decoder so the video stutters extremely, so I can't say anything about how fluid it is. For $3500 Apple couldnt include that decoder, LOL. It's hard to love that company.
I'm not sure what you mean with 'things that are actually discernible', this obviously is an extremely zoomed in part of the video where the HVEC part compressed to less details. But again, to do a fair comparison one should compare the same frames, so not sure how valid the above is.
harigeharry I missed that u did not have hardware decoding, that explains why you would not notice the motion difference.
Differing compression can create different lossy artifacts. So unless you have something to discern such as words that are legible you can't tell which truly has more detail. You could take the same smeary image and apply sharpness or grain to it and create an illusion of detail that is not actually real. So you need something you can actually recognize to tell when real detail is present or not.
Also some GPU encodings to benchmark v CPU

harigeharry could you have picked a more out of focus "sample" dear lord do an AB test with something in focus at least
What am I looking at?
rerun119 Files encoded on a GPU by Nvidia's hardware encoder for comparison with the files in the original post that were encoded on a CPU using unspecified software.
Problem with that is that any comparisons people do here are likely going to be both subjective and inaccurate.
Looks good
