Deleting 3k, maybe some 4k too....hello 6k

When I was new to VR last year I ended up downloading a bunch of 3k VR scenes. The max I could play on my setup was 5k. 4k was enough to get me excited though.

Watched a few of these 3k ones as they have actresses who don't have (As many) higher resolution scenes, but many have not as I gravitated toward 4k / 5k.

Finally I have a setup to watch 6k scenes. I've recently seen how much more clear 6K is (VR Bangers, and presumably SLR Originals too - will watch soon, and some smaller outfits)

[Yes, I know there is talk about 6k, not being true 6k, etc...but it seems more crisp and clear to me]

So..I think 6k is the straw that breaks the camels back for keeping 3k files around. Watching a few minutes of some of them and they just seem so dang grainy and unreal. Can see myself nuking some 4k videos too. That will free up hundreds of GB. Already been nuking a lot of 2-D stuff.

4k+ is the lowest I can go now (WankZ). Any 4k videos I watch would have to be pretty darn special / unique in someway.

When is 8k coming around? 🙂

Yes, I know there is some disagreement, about what is 6k or what isn't, but to my eye it looks a lot more clear.

On the 6k note, maybe having a switch to separate out those videos would be nice. Just like SLR has 5k.

What would be extra nice is if we can get the 5k switch to work and a category at the same time. And/or two switches. 90FPS and 5k and _____ studio.

I see SLR Originals has 1 6k video, any plans for more?

There is no visual difference between 5K and 6K. 5K file is 2700p, and 6K is 3000p. There is no setup that gives real 6K now, just the one I know that is in WIP, it's somewhere 7K. But not yet used anywhere. In other words 5K are as good.

Philip You are right and also I feel wrong. Just based on my observation. 🙂 Certain companies 6k indeed...does not look any different, resolution wise. EmilyBloom 6k, for example. Maybe VRConk - I'd have to look again. But when compared to VR Bangers 6k...their 6k videos look more crisp and superior. Don't know what they are doing or not doing...but that's all I can say. Not the only person with this viewpoint, found at least one other guy on Reddit.

5k can differ in quality I feel too. Even in the same studio. Some SexBabes 5k...some are better some are worse. Maybe it's just lighting? Or an equipment upgrade? (Didn't check upload/timestamps)

Just saw the VirtualTaboo 7k...want to say it looks sharper than 6k VRB...but they picked a dark video to be their first 7k. Nevermind, I have zero interest in their storylines...was just looking at the quality.

vrtester resolution doesn't really say much, I mean it matters, but consider 4K of GoPro and 4K of some red camera, those are two completely different things. Emily shoots on VuzeXR, which technically does record enough pixels to make 5K, but realistically they are not as good as 5K recorded with zcam by VRbangers. Virtual taboo I haven't seen yet, but it might be the set up I just mentioned above right before they released it actually.

vrtester I checked virtualtaboo stuff, it's a new camera that we also know about and waiting for delivery, so all Originals will be shot on that new camera, however I don't see a reason to bump resolution to 7K because it's still same px on sensors. Probably 5400x2700 will suffice. I'd say it's a faux marketing, I might miss something but not likely. 7K is still possible with some modifications.

I've seen it but haven't tried doing a comparison with the 5K version yet. I can say just from checking out the 7K version it is noticeably sharper even on my old Rift headset. Like usually I have to increase sharpness a bit in the player to make things look more in focus, but that's not needed at all with their 7K video. Also the 10bit depth should help with better colors but they chose a quite dark scene so it was hard to tell if that's an improvement.

But I don't think the 7K is faux marketing, I bet it looks even better on higher end headsets than my Rift because I think its display is the limiting factor for me at this point. Also keep in mind it still gets warped/stretched to cover a 180° sphere, so having a higher video resolution in the parts that are quite warped together does help in making the end result look better even if the headset display is the limiting factor.

Aerowen I know for a fact that this camera has a sensor of 2800 x 2800 px. That's the max width/height you can get from it. There is simply no way to get 3000 and more with one exception — reducing FOV, which I don't see there.
As per 10bit it certainly will help with color correction at post, but all VR displays are 8bit anyways.
