We got this debate if we should release lower resolutions within a day and air 8K later or hold on some 5-7 days until we manage to transcode 8K 1h long videos and have a release. Also SLR is known for super high quality encodings that also take much longer time compared to fast encodings even in 8K. Curios if we want to lower the standard for faster encodings. We use up to 16 threads per encoding process and up to 5 servers per scene to encode different resolutions in parallel. 7680x4320 @ 60 fps 1 hour long video takes 2 days to encode at the highest priority when the encoder is not overloaded with tasks. But sometimes, it happens that we receive several hundred encoding tasks within a few hours and it makes everything slower than usual, but most of the time we have enough capacity to process videos at a usual speed. We do all the encodings in-house and are looking for a dedicated service provider to streamline it. Potentially we can have profile slider the same like for JAV and Compilations

Releasing the crappy quality first would be super confusing and annoying imo. Besides I never watch anything but the highest quality file

Low quality is a waste of time , would love to see some older quality scenes upscaled sounds like you need more processing capacity.

Maybe cloud compute is an option? Not sure if that's viable from a cost perspective though.

You waste a lot of resources encoding scenes that don't get more than a couple hundred views total as well. Tell those creators to up their game or boot them off the platform. Or alternatively encode scenes from creators like that with a faster but lower quality encoding profile.

you should allow streaming of untouched material, that way we instantly get the 8K source material to stream, while it is transcoding the different quality. Problem solved and best of both worlds.

why? I can stream it from DNLA. I download the untouched files and stream them that way with DeoVR fine. Depends on the bitrate and your wifi of course but most 7K untouched files will stream fine.

phyuggene All the big providers will stream fine. I stream SLR Originals, Realjamvr, Porncornvr, Fuckpassvr, VRHush UNTOUCHED files from DeoVR fine. There is NO reason not to allow this.

I have never been waiting for any scenes and wasn't even aware of the gap between receipt of the source material and its release caused by the encoding process. I am only looking at the latest releases and I am getting a batch of new scenes every day, so I am totally fine with how things are right now.

On the other hand, I would hate it to have to monitor released scenes over a week to find out if the highest quality version is already available or not.

...i'm already waiting till a scene has a perfect script anyway so my opinion is pointless really, but for the record i think it would be confusing to have low quality prereleases. It might also devalue the SLR brand. As long as there's a steady stream of releases, it doesn't matter if they're a few days behind when you received them in the office, we still just see quality releases on a regular basis...

From what you said here it sounds like you can scale horizontally by adding more servers:

If you have multiple encoding jobs running simultaneously on the same machine then it would probably go quicker if you do one at a time and queue the others.
