I have a 1080ti and a quest 2 and basically all videos up to 7k play fine at 90fps, but on many (probably half) of 8k videos it drops to 25fps and is basically unwatchable. This is of course playing locally, and yes i've installed both microsoft and k-lite codecs.
So im considering upgrading to either a 3080 or 4070 (unless im missing something and my 1080ti should handle it?). But id be curious what codecs or whatever else do the nvidia 30xx or 40xx series have that 10xx series doesnt? Someone told me 3080 is just as good as 4070 except 4070 can decode av1 and 3080 cannot, however they said dont expect av1 to be used anytime soon. All the videos i've downloaded are h265. I'm leaning towards the 3080 since i can get it used a lot cheaper than a new 4070, and aside from being newer (and if theres anything else the 4070 does aside from av1 that the 3080 doesnt) the gaming performance is essentially the same (i do game as well).
Thanks
PS: It also makes me wonder why half of the 8K videos play smoothly and the other half dont even though they both are h265 and have the same bitrate.
