  • 8K videos choppy question about GPU upgrade

I have a 1080ti and a quest 2 and basically all videos up to 7k play fine at 90fps, but on many (probably half) of 8k videos it drops to 25fps and is basically unwatchable. This is of course playing locally, and yes i've installed both microsoft and k-lite codecs.

So im considering upgrading to either a 3080 or 4070 (unless im missing something and my 1080ti should handle it?). But id be curious what codecs or whatever else do the nvidia 30xx or 40xx series have that 10xx series doesnt? Someone told me 3080 is just as good as 4070 except 4070 can decode av1 and 3080 cannot, however they said dont expect av1 to be used anytime soon. All the videos i've downloaded are h265. I'm leaning towards the 3080 since i can get it used a lot cheaper than a new 4070, and aside from being newer (and if theres anything else the 4070 does aside from av1 that the 3080 doesnt) the gaming performance is essentially the same (i do game as well).

Thanks

PS: It also makes me wonder why half of the 8K videos play smoothly and the other half dont even though they both are h265 and have the same bitrate.

I also had 1080Ti and yes there is a problem with playing vids over 3840p ... just the nvdec version is too old there.
About the upgrade i can recommend you to get 40xx series as it supports AV1 encoding too and this is useful if you use VirtualDesktop.

Other than av1 is there another reason? I doubt SLR or other stuff is going to use AV1 anytime soon so i dont know why id need AV1. I dont use virtual desktop, so id rather save $130 if its not going to give me any benefit for what im doing. Its the same performance (and the 3080 even has quite a lot more memory bandwidth than the 4070). Im not sure what id even need virtual desktop for as steamvr and anything else i've played works fine. And by the time AV1 does become more used im sure 50xx will be out (probably a year or more).

Also if virtual desktop is useful how is AV1 helpful there? (im reading up on virtual desktop now, but it doesnt seem something that id need so far)

If you play newer games that support DLSS 3.0 and 3.5 like Cyberpunk77 RTX 4070 will be significant faster then 3080 so for me it worths these $130 as future investment !

The higher memory bandwidth on the 3080 doesnt matter? Even for high res vr? The 3080 is 760 GB/s and 4070 is only 504

I game on a 60 inch 60hz 1080p TV (occasionally i use my 1440p monitor, but i usually prefer my 60 inch tv). Will there be any game that would drop below 60fps at that resolution whether its the 3080 or 4070, even with better DLSS?

Oh, of course i game on my higher resolution quest 2 as well, but are there any DLSS games for VR? Seems like a catch-22 unless im going both 4k and 4090. Whether 4070 or 3080 its probably more than enough at 1080p, DLSS or not, but if i were to go 4k the 4070 wouldnt be enough.
