I purchased a Quest 3 last week, I’ve only played one game on it so far (the first encounter mixed reality thing) and the controller tracking worked fine but I’m having an issue with the tracking when using SLR

When I’m looking though any of the playlists such as my favourites or new released scenes etc or scrolling though the bottom part of the video where you can select the different positions the controller will randomly lose tracking and start to float off into the middle of the screen, the image of the controller goes black and just floats around the screen but if I then raise my arm and wiggle it the tracking is then picked back up and goes back to the correct position, the first couple of days it only did it once or twice but its doing it all the time now and I just wondered if anyone else is having this issue or maybe I have a faulty unit? Could it be that am lying down as opposed to standing up maybe? This was never an issue on Quest 2 though.

I used to get this exact issue on the Quest 2 if room had lost light then as soon as I turned a light on the tracking would be fine but on Quest 3 I’m using in a very well lit room, the headset and controllers are both fully up to date and I’ve also made sure the cameras on the headset are clean but nothing stops it doing it. Just interested to see if anyone else has this issue before I return the unit. Thanks

Hey xxxscottyxxx , we had reports about thumbstick compatibility problems on Quest 3 while using Quest Link, and this will be fixed with the DeoVR version 13.12.2, however, no one so far reported this type of issue, but this to me looks like a hardware issue rather than a software one.

Did you maybe try to google it and see if other users also experienced this issue with their Quest 3 units? For example, I found something similar on Reddit for Quest 2, not sure if this would help: https://www.reddit.com/r/OculusQuest/comments/10riynr/controllers_keep_floating_away/

Thanks for your reply, I did google the issue but the only tracking issues people were reporting were while playing fast moving games, obviously my issue is the exact opposite!

I was really hoping it may be a software issue but I'm far from any sort of expert on this, so you think its more likely to be s hardware issue? I've had it less than 2weeks so could always return. Thanks

xxxscottyxxx I personally don't want to be someone who will tell you that it's 100% a faulty unit, but would be worth checking and seeing if the new pair of controllers would resolve this issue, what I would do for sure, as I can see that a lot of users are having issues with Q3 in general.

xxxscottyxxx is there a big light difference between the left and right side in the room you're in, Maybe a nightstand lamp.

My right controller loses tracking too, but to my left is a lamp. When I wiggle it in front of, it picks it up again like you describe.

Rakly3 No nothing uneven, main light (very bright) in middle of the ceiling. The controller just kept losing tracking and you would see the controller float across the screen, it started to get more and more often too. I have returned the unit now but they didnt have anymore 512g models in stock so I've taken a refund.

I will get another when back in stock but ive seen lots of other people with quality issues such as dead pixels, bits of broken plastic etc and mine had none of these issues except for the bad tracking, I'm worried now I'll get one with another issues. Not sure if its worth waiting a while for the quality checks to improve cos at the moment it feels a bit like a lottery weather you get a good or bad unit.

Back to the quest 2 in the meantime!
