  • Why Quest 3 Software Deserves a 2/10 rating

Someone asked me on one of the threads here to explain why the Quest 3 software is unacceptably bad. If I were to rate the Quest 3, I'd say that the device itself (the hardware) merits an 8/10 review. However, the software is a major letdown, and I would give it a 2/10 rating. Here are ten reasons why I think this, @SchnuppiLilac.

  1. There should be an opt-out option for the “People” feature in the Explore menu. Currently, there is no way to disable this feature, and it takes up a significant amount of space in the menu. Additionally, the suggested users are not from my Facebook friends list, but rather random users that I have never met or interacted with. This feature feels intrusive and unnecessary.

  2. It is essential for Meta to redesign and improve certain features of AirLink. Many users, including myself, find the AirLink bar to be inoperable due to its light requirements. At best, the menu bar has a 75% click accuracy rate with the lights on, and it does not function at all with the lights out. This is particularly problematic when using devices like the Quest 3 for viewing films via a PC, as it is wasteful to have the room lights on while watching films in VR.

  3. As numerous Quest 3 users have pointed out on this forum, Passthrough via AirLink is currently unsupported. This is particularly ironic, given that the Quest 3 was marketed as the world's first consumer XR headset. Considering the importance of Passthrough functionality in XR experiences, it should have been a top priority for Meta to ensure that this feature was available at launch.

  4. Users should not be forced to register as developers in order to access basic features of the Quest 3 headset. The current requirement is to register as a developer in order to disable the “Guardian” function. Moreover, the registration process requires users to disclose additional personal information and accept terms that are not clearly disclosed to consumers. This business practice may violate laws in both the US and EU.

  5. Meta’s home environment and the AirLink portal feature a default background noise that cannot be disabled without turning off the volume for all other features of the device. Despite numerous user requests to address this issue, nothing has been done to allow for the noise to be turned off. In fact, Meta’s official response has been that the background noise is intended as “music” and cannot be turned off.

  6. Meta has added numerous pieces of bloatware to the Quest 3 device, which cannot be uninstalled or hidden from the graphical user interface. These unwanted applications, such as the “People” and “Explore” apps, are permanently pinned to the Universal Menu, taking up valuable space and distracting from the user experience. Additionally, the default browser offers numerous “experiences” that cannot be hidden or removed, cluttering the interface.

  7. There is no way to hide or permanently remove uninstalled apps. They sit permanently on the menu screen, cluttering up the screen and possibly as a source of embarrassment. Because these ghost icons can never be removed, users are penalized for trying out new apps. Moreover, apps from SideQuest aren’t even visible by default on the menu screen, requiring users to select “App Library” and “Unknown Sources”.
    https://www.reddit.com/r/OculusQuest/comments/n4s2z0/can_you_hide_uninstalled_apps_from_your_library/

  8. Missing basic applications. Why can't I capture 3D photos or 3D videos without purchasing an additional app? Why can't I watch videos with multiple language tracks in any of the free video apps available on the Meta App store? There should be an application like SkyBox with XR viewing options, since Quest 3 is, allegedly, the world’s first consumer XR headset. Meta is trying to show off the Quest 3 platform for games: Why is there no basic default app for board games like Chess or even games like MoveFast, which they developed at great expense, pre-installed on the device?

  9. Untrustworthy activities. I find it suspicious that Meta requires me to install a phone app to use their Quest 3 headset. It seems like this step is intended to collect more personal information about me, such as device IDs, and to install more tracking software on my various devices. I have installed a Firewall on my phone and have been tracing the connection activities of the “Meta” app. It appears to be primarily focused on datamining, and I am concerned about the potential risks to my privacy. Additionally, I do not understand why the app requires location services to be active.

  10. Guardian Assistant. Every five minutes I am warned about turning tracking on or off with low light. When I activate the device, there is a play area of about a metre square, and if I step outside of it for longer than two sips of a drink, the device gives me additional warnings. It is extremely intrusive and can be dangerous in some circumstances, as the warning blocks what I'm looking at in AR. Even on the lowest sensitivity, the software is just bad. Although in Developer Mode, the Guardian can be turned off, when turned off functions of the device won't work. This issue alone makes the software on Quest 3 deserving of a 2 out of 10 review rating.

Regarding #9, the Oculus app requires locations permissions to able to locate headsets via Bluetooth which has been the case since Android 6.0. I doubt there is anything more to it than that...

from: https://developer.android.com/about/versions/marshmallow/android-6.0-changes.html#behavior-hardware-id

"To access the hardware identifiers of nearby external devices via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi scans, your app must now have the ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION or ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION permissions:

WifiManager.getScanResults()
BluetoothDevice.ACTION_FOUND
BluetoothLeScanner.startScan()

"

    Those are really really nitpicking things. 2/10 is way exaggerated. 95% of users don't give a shit about those issues. And I'm sure Meta is working to fix them in the next update. This only came out a couple weeks ago, it's going to improve.

      I think the software is great. Would be nice to have passthrough on pc but that's probably easier said then done.

        This answer leaves unanswered the reason why Quest 3 requires phone access. The device is sophisticated enough to browse the Oculus store and download apps, yet Meta seems to be using this feature as a way to collect user data without their knowledge or consent. If the purpose of the app is to facilitate a smooth transition from an old device to a new one, or to manage multiple devices, then it should be presented as an optional feature rather than a requirement. As it stands, the mandatory phone access policy reeks of exploitation and mistrust. In my opinion, this is nothing more than spyware, and Meta knows it!

        It's difficult for me to read some of the web responses without suspecting that they are either paid for by Meta or written by Meta employees. The software is experience-breaking, and I'm not alone in my struggles. Yesterday, I had to perform hard boots six times (that's not an exaggeration), and I don't believe I have a faulty unit. The default apps simply don't seem to function correctly. If users are expected to purchase Virtual Desktop and a variety of other apps just to have a decent experience, then it's clear that the Quest 3 is not ready for prime time.

          Maybe older versions were different, but the only permission it requires on my Android phone by default is "Location".

          Come on... when you start thinking everyone that has a different opinion from you is a shill, you might be taking things a bit too seriously.

          The Quest 3 is pretty far from perfect. Meta can be intrusive and the software is annoying in many ways, but I think 2/10 is unfair and many of your items are relatively minor and/or will likely be fixed in future updates. The alternatives to the meta quest are even worse...

          Just my $.02 and no I don't work or shill for Meta.

            fenderwq FYI ... passthrough works with PCVR with the latest version of Virtual Desktop.

              noiro777 do you mean the chromo key passthrough or actual pass-through with occlusion, depth information etc?

                He means he doesn't know what he's talking about, because I bought it and asked the developer.

                While the recent update has made a number of improvements, there's still a lot of work that needs to be done. A little bird told me that Meta intends to ignore all of these simple fixes and focus on A.I. algorithms for leg generation.

                Have a laugh.

                noiro777 everyone that has a different opinion from you is a shill

                For Quest 3 to function to its potential, VirtualDesktop is a mandatory app. Meta should have bundled VirtualDesktop with the device. AirLink doesn't support passthrough and passthrough is their main selling point for the device.
