Constant stuttering after last weeks updates

My rig has been working fine for several months then after some updates last week, everything started stuttering.
If the UI is up, it appears that it is pausing/resuming a few times a second.
both steam and nvidia driver were updated. I also got a new monitor. replaced 2 monitors (4k60hz + 1440p165hz) with one 4k120hz.
This applies to all video. SLR web and downloaded. old 1440p/4k h.264 and new h.265 higher res stuff

Win10
AMD 5950x
3080 TI
pimax 8kx

Tried but no change:

just in case this was a new stress on the gpu, i set the monitor to 4k60hz
tried switching monitor to use hdmi instead of displayport
downgraded nvidia driver
completely reinstalled windows
installed MS HEVC Video Extensions
installed LAVFilters

No idea what to try next

howdydoody When you say stuttering, do you mean it’s literally stopping and starting like it’s buffering or do you mean like a juddering effect where it slows down.

If it’s the latter, check your headset hasn’t switched to playing the video in H264 instead of H265. I noticed the juddering effect in the last few days and it’s now fine after correcting the playback to H265.

Is the whole UI unresponsive, or only the video?

And just an FYI. HDMI increases the load on the GPU.

everything seems fine. just when i try to play a video, it pauses/resumes over and over. sometimes more frequently than others. I didnt notice before, but the green light on the outside of the pimax actually blinks when this is happening. so might be a hardware thing. im opening a case with them
