Slr connect - is it dead?

Hi I recently found your site and tried the slr app (after a lot of fiddling around) on the oculus quest. Content viewed through it is certainly much better than anywhere else.

I have however then been incredibly frustrated by the fact that I am a subscriber to virtualtaboo, CzechVR and wankz, much of their content you offer, but where they want me to pay AGAIN, per video to access what I’ve already paid for. After quite a bit of digging around (it’s very buried) I found your SLR connect section, which seemed to be what I was looking for, however i was the disappointed to see it literally has only 3 sites available to connect. And based on related forum comments this has not changed in some time, which leads me to believe this offering is dead, and other providers have shunned it and would rather try and fleece/double charge their subscribers to view their stuff through SLR.

Is this the case? Is there and progress with the sites mentioned above? If so any idea on timeline?

SLR seems to be the only service that addresses the failings of the oculus quest. Ie a bug that means downloads fail if larger than 2gb, the cap on 4K vids, the limited harddrive space coupled with the crap quality and fps if u use each sites stream option.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. And yeah I messaged them earlier, I’m not holding out too much hope of a reply tho. It’s certainly a real shame.

Assuming that the online stream players those sites use don’t magically improve tons before my renewals I’ll likely cancel and switch to an SLR sub. Having just sunk 3-12month subscriptions on 3 sites, immediately chucking another couple of hundred upfront on SLR gets a little hard to justify lol

As for SLR connect more broadly, it’s definitely unfortunate that those who do seem to be signing up are all the ones who are already included in SLR premium subscription. I would have thought the companies that aren’t included in premium would be the ones more interested in utilising connect, as it would increase their retention and make those contemplating switching less inclined to do so.

I guess most the problems I am having tho are because I’m using a quest and not the rift or the a vive so there’s much more benefit to the SLR app than there would be for many other users. But if the quest sees broad adoption presumably more and more people will encounter all the same problems as myself and eventually discover that SLR is at least for now the only way to address them. Hopefully the other producers realise that and become more receptive.

Fantastic, that’s great (and surprisingly fast) news. would have been a shame to have to cancel with them as they definitely produce the best content. Thanks for the update.

I actually grabbed a month premium of SLR, and yes as per the above person, although there is some gems in there it can be hard to dig out from either old lower res content or poorly shot content. Even quite a bit of the 5/6k content looks poor and low res (which is assume is from just poor lighting and poor recording). I expect this will gradually improve as the months go by tho

I wonder if creating a “editors choice” filter would be a good way to help users to discover the best content without needing to dig through stuff so much themselves. Ie just turning on “6k” and “3d” certainly still brings up a lot of sub par content. But if your content team manually go through and asses each piece added (since maybe end of 2018) and if it hits a high bar in terms of camera work, immersion, lighting and overall recording quality then give it an “editors choice” tag.

Philip brilliant...although I guess that could be skewed potentially by users, if there’s no final say from an editor. Ie it could be the actress, or the scene/fetish has a particular appeal that is good at driving likes, which doesn’t necessarily have complete correlation with overall quality. Either way, anything that makes it easier to find good content will be super useful

doublevr this is disappointing to hear, it seemed to be the only way it was likely to get high res czechVR content on the quest, or to get their content running with the launch.

I’ve shot them a new message asking why and if they can offer any alternative solutions or if they are planning to develop their own side loaded dedicated player for the quest with the same feature set. Which would seem a massive and unnecessary technical undertaking, but as the quest and similar wireless headsets take up an ever increasing size of the market whilst simultaneously producers push resolutions higher it seems the only way to go. Hell the quest can barely manage 4K. And anything through webVR looks terrible, and choppy meaning the only option for even 4K on the quest is either SLR or downloading the whole 8gig file first on a pc and then casting it to the quest Which is a hugely tedious boner killer.
