Quest 2 the only choice? (in the US)

Looking for a replacement for my 5 year old Odyssey+ headset. After reading around, it seems like the Quest 2 is really the only choice for SLR ? (I'm in the US so the pico 4 isnt really on the table)
Seems strange since its been around since 2020 and i'd be taking a step down in terms of FoV. Most discussions seem a bit old so just wanted to get a 2023 opinion on best SLR headset

howdydoody If you're okay waiting until later this year (probably fall), then Quest 3. Quest 3 per leaks (by leaker who was very accurate previously) with have 30% better resolution than Quest 2, it will have pancake lenses instead of fresnel (meaning a much larger sweetspot), should have better colors and blacks, though not OLED good (It will still be LCD). And the passthrough will be better (color for one thing).

If you're a high end person than there's even more to be excited about: Pimax Crystal shipping in the next couple of months, Bigscreen Beyond coming in the fall which will have OLED and high res and tiny form factor. Headsets with more vague 2023-2024 release dates would be the Apple HMD and Samsung will also be releasing an OLED based headset in late 2023, early 2024.

Out of my Rift, Odyssey, and Reverb, the Reverb is my favorite, but disappointed it doesn't do the pass through.

I was going get a pico 4, still might but I decided to wait for quest 3 which they say coming out this year.

And only reason I will be upgrading is the color passthrough that pico 4 and quest pro have, and quest 3 will have too.

If it weren't for the color passthrough I'm fine with the quest 2

If passthrough is something you're interested in right now, Reverb G2 is not the device you should get.

Imho really great passthrough won't be available at mass consumer prices in the next 2-3 years anyway, so maybe you want to buy a great headset for actual VR now and a new one for VR/AR in 2 or 3 years.

So if VR is your main concern and interest right now and if you sport a spicy PC and the cable doesn't bother you Reverb G2 is an amazing device, probably offering the best picture quality at prices well below 1k right now. With a custom headplate you can even improve the factory FOV.

It's all a question of priorities and expectations. 😉

im on the fence about passthrough. having a camera pointed at those areas feels creepy. maybe ill get over it. luckily have a 3080TI so maybe a Reverb is the ticket.

I'm curious how it would look filming an actual pov with quest pro with screen record, i bet someone out there already done it. I would, just to see how it look. Or with the pico 4. 🤔

howdydoody With that computer if money isn't an issue and the best vr you can get is what you want then get a Pimax 8k x. I have a Q2 and I promise the FOV being almost double with the Pimax is crazy. Take a look at it.

doublevr imo in passthrough the 3d effect works better, especially like a 69 and titties up close during cg, it literally looks like it's in front of your face, in regular vr it's in front of the camera, idk 🤷‍♂️...I like it 👍

One time in pt, I had this one scene that worked great for all positions, I had the guardian off and it was very easy to reposition the models where ever in my room, doggystyle I had her over my desk, or I'd mover to the bed, the corner of the bed, seated cg rcg I'd sit in my desk chair, maybe roll to the middle of my room, laying cg rcg I'd move in different areas on my bed. After it finished I literally needed a shower, now that was sum immersed shit 🥵😏🥂, never with regular vr I had that situation, in regular vr I normally just watch all positions laying down.

I like both vr and pt tho, the pt just an option if you want to turn on and try. 🤷‍♂️

If you’re like me, and need a standalone headset as you haven’t got a top end PC, the two affordable options right now are Quest 2 and Pico 4.

Quest 2 has been around for a few years now so has a whole industry of peripherals around it and works with all the main apps, I’m guessing that Pico 4 probably doesn’t yet.

Quest Pro is undoubtedly better, if you can afford it, but it’s three times the price and I don’t know if it’s THAT much better as I’ve never used one. The Quest 2 still works pretty well enough for me.

The downside to getting Quest 2 right now is that, by all reports, Quest 3 is just around the corner so it will be old tech in probably a matter of months. I don’t know what the price will be for Quest 3 though.

The tethered headsets I have no clue about as I have no interest in having a super expensive PC as well as an expensive headset on top of that.

For me, if my Quest 2 broke tomorrow, I’d probably try to wait for Quest 3. Failing that it’s a toss up between the slightly more technologically advanced Pico 4 or the Quest 2 which has the whole Meta industry behind it.

rerun119 when it comes to buying high-dollar electronics like that, i tend to prefer purchasing from official retailers with good return policies and stuff like that. It doesnt seem the pimax is generally available like that in the US as far as my initial searching goes.

LordCrash I don't know much about the Crystal. I had heard about the 12k because I'm supposed to be able to trade in the 8k for a discount on the 12k. I think the 12k is supposed to have as even bigger FOV which I'll take but is not even necessary because I don't see the edges when watching now. Maybe the Crystal is the way to go if it features improvements in other places.
