Hi all, I just finished reading a great book that I wanted to share.
Ethical PORN for DICKS A Man's Guide to Responsible Viewing Pleasure
A Non-Judgmental Way of Thinking and Talking- for Men, Partners, and Therapists
with a Foreword by Tristan Taormino and an Afterword by Chanel Preston
"There's a lot of screaming, yelling, and smut-shaming out there about porn. David Ley's reasonable, calm, informed writing should be read by anyone interested in porn-and it should be required reading for anyone tempted to legislate about it."-Dan Savage
A few excerpts:
"The answer to bad [unethical] porn isn't no porn...it's to try and make better porn." - Annie Sprinkle (porn star & sexologist)
We, the people who watch porn, can and should start to "vote" with our mouses, our smartphones, our computers, our fingers, our eyes, and yes, even with our dicks. We can vote supporting porn that is:
- Made legally
- Respects the rights of performers
- Pays performers for their labor
- Respects the copyright of the producer
- Shows both fantasy sex AND real-world sex, so that we can see and explore both
- Is as diverse as the people consuming it — showing all the thirty-one million different flavors of people that are out there
- Celebrates sexuality as a diverse, complex, and multi-faceted component of being human, without saying there is a right or wrong way to be sexual
- Is made by people who are trying to make "better porn"
- And is watched by people who want there to BE "better porn"
- Treats both performers and consumers of porn as free, consenting, thinking, and powerful beings
Ethical porn is a partnership. A sexy, slippery, hot, heavy, and dirty partnership between people who love to fuck in front of cameras and people who love to watch them do it.
If you ever feel a little weird or even shameful about your porn consumption, I highly encourage you to give this a read. It separates fact from fearmongering, and gives you actionable things you can do to know the porn you consume is made ethically and promotes sexual wellness.
If you've read it, share your thoughts, and if you've got another book recommendation, I'd love to hear it!
