I noticed recently that HereSphere added DirectShow support, which was easy to set up. You just follow a link to download codecs (same as if you've added LAV filters before.. but even if you haven't it's just a download and basic install).. then in the HereSphere app option you switch from Media Foundation to DirectShow.. that simple and it now plays seemingly every video from the few I tested instead of giving error messages on many videos previously
HereSphere still doesn't support photos though.. and can still be a pain in the azz to set up controls. DeoVR is easier, can view photos (at least jpgs or something.. many not pngs.. has some support either way) and I'm sure directly viewing SLR is a much better experience.
So downloaded videos, I'm likely switching back to HereSphere again with this improved compatibility (due to the better visuals with better autofocus, etc as others have mentioned and I experienced already), but if I want quickness, ease of use, SLR site support, photos, then I'd use DeoVR
