  • 120 fps @2700p video look just as good as the 8k videos?

alibaba - 120 fps really brings amazing lifelike movement to the videos, so for sure it can look good if not better than non 120 fps higher resolution videos, especially dependent on things like lighting, noise, compression etc

alibaba It's a big misconception by many people that, for recorded content, higher "K" = better quality.

There's like a thousand things that all have influence on quality. I'm not even exaggerating.
The only time where this is objectively true, is the original file has the most details. Subjectively, you can improve how it looks. Colour correction. Interpolation (your 120 fps), sharpening. etc

My advice, use whichever you think looks best for you.

Rakly3 I have a question for you that no one seems to be able to answer for me.

I have a Geforce RTX 3060 new computer that can play anything downloaded. I'm using a Pimax 8KX.
When I stream the videos with DEO on any setting example: 1440, 1920, 2160, 2880 and higher. The frames get cut in half to around 29 or 27 or so in fps. If I pause the video for a second then they will go back up to 59 or 60 fps for only a second then they fall right back to 29 fps. Also I can stream any setting on wankzvr with HereSphere

It doesn't feel like lag because it never stops playing on any setting. And every once in a while it doesn't do it and will play at 60 fps. This is very annoying and is going to play me download everything again.

If anybody knows what could be causing this, Then I would love you forever

rerun119 all the video decoders for rtx cards are the same. So it either comes to performance or to a missing or incorrectly working hevc video extension. Also make sure you use the h265 source not h264 source.

      Hevc video extension

      • Check if you have the hevc video extension installed on your pc.
      • It happens to me from time to time that this extensions stops working even though its installed. To fix this go to add or remove programs. Search for hevc, click the tile than click advanced options. Click Reset than uninstall. After this reinstall in the Microsoft store.
      • You can check in your task manager if the decoder of your gpu is doing the work

      Performance
If the hevc extension is installed and you still have performance issues it's likely due to supersampeling or a pitool setting. I have a rtx2070 and a pimax 8kx and I can play anything but the VrAllure and Vrhush files with 100% supersampeling at full framerate.
The supersampeling can be set in steam globally but also under the video tab of steam vr settings for each individual app (per-application video settings). So make sure you don't override it there accidentally. If all is correct you should have a resolution of 5058x3160.

      Pitool
So make sure you have a profile for deovr/SLR/Heresphere and that these are setup correctly. My settings are:

      • FOV large
      • render quality 1
      • fixed fov rendering close
      • compatible with parrell... Close (this one could cause you issues)
      • turn on smart smoothing close
      • hidden area mask checked
      • compatible vive unchecked

FYI, in my experience heresphere is able to handle larger resolutions more smoothly.

Thank you so much, you are the man. As you can tell i'm not very good at computers. I will try all of these.

      A couple of questions:

I got this computer this year so it came with the latest windows. I think that comes with the codex built in. I did install the Hevc codex a separate time. If I uninstall it will I have to go download it again to put it back on the computer? Doesn't it cost money?

How can I check if 'the decoder of your gpu is doing the work'. I know how to pull up task manager but don't know what to look for to see if decoder of your gpu is doing the work.

Do you ever change anything in the rtx graphics card setting?

Also, how come VrAllure and Vrhush don't work at full res but everything else does?

        rerun119

        • To check if the Hevc video extension is working play a h265 movie and check the "Video Decode" graph of your task manager during playback:
        • You'll only have to reinstall and reset if "Video Decode" doesn't seem to do anything.
        • If you buy the extension once it will be linked to your account and you can install and uninstall it as many times as needed for free (so you'll pay a maximum of 0.99$).
        • Never needed to change anything in my graphic cards settings no.
        • VrAllure and VrHush have the highest resolution of all studios I'm aware off with 8192x4096 (which is the maximum resolution supported on current gen cards). It seems to be just a little more than my RTX 2070 is able to handle at 100% super sampling with a Pimax 8kx though but maybe your card will be able to handle it. You'll have to try for yourself. Probably need to try Heresphere if you want to do that though. Truly great image quality when everything is in focus.

fenderwq First off the codex are working.
Second, I can't find the supersampler for steam global or locally anywhere. I tried to look it up on youtube and the web. I could see it used to be there. It looks like they have changed their setting or something with an update. Now I can't find it anywhere.
Third, If I put Pitool setting on 75 fps then it cuts it to 37, if 90 then 45. So I turned off motion smoothing on Pitool and it went from 37 fps on suppose to be 75 fps to 55 fps. So it added 25%. It does the same thing on 60 and 90. So I only needed to find the last 25%. Changing motion smoothing on the steam settings did nothing.

But the big change I tried was I changed it from native to upscaling at 110 fps. It works perfectly with no frames lost. I have no idea what upscaling is but I'll take it.

Hey this may help you out I had some similar issues back then when I got my RTX, and my solution was to Install this Extension for HEVC in the Microsoft Store search for "HEVC Video Extensions"
Before this x265 will not work it was a nightmare

rerun119 Did you also install the LAV filters?

I recommend using the k-Lite standard codec pack.
It has the LAV filters and also comes with a helpful tool to reset all your codecs and filters to their default values.
You can find them here: https://codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

If you purchased the HEVC codec from the Microsoft store, you do not need to rebuy it as long you use the same Microsoft/Windows account.

But, you can also get them for free on the k-lite website!
              Here: https://codecguide.com/media_foundation_codecs.htm
For SLR only "HEVC video (a.k.a. H.265)" is needed from this page.

If you have installed everything and still have issues.

Which monitor(s) do you have connected to your PC? And their settings. resolution, refresh rates. And which kind of cable, HDMI, Display Port, USB-C?

Try disabling any secondary monitors while using the headset. Use Display Port instead of HDMI when possible.
Only have one monitor? Lower the refresh rate to 60-75 if it is a high refresh rate monitor. If it's more than 1080p, try lowering it to 1080p.

Disable V-sync or any other 'sync' technique anywhere you can find it. Windows settings, driver settings, any tool or app settings, etc. - This actually sounds like a plausible cause based off of your description of the behavior.

Are you using any display dongles or output converters? DP to HDMI for example.

I'm not suggesting these as permanent solution, but it will give us a better understanding of what the cause may be.

Can you check for driver updates for your GPU?
Do you have an integrated GPU in your system? - Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc on your keyboard, and go to the Performance tab as shown in fenderwq 's image. See if there are more than one GPU's in the list. The GPU's are always at the bottom of the list. - GPU 0, GPU 1 etc

Pitool will override (most of) the Steam settings. So here it is normal the smoothing on Steam didn't change anything.
              For !! -> VIDEO <- !!, never use smoothing!

              1. There's no benefit doing so.
              2. It degrades image sharpness (looks like a light Gaussian blur)
              3. Can cause lag.
              4. Codecs/video filters are better suited for this if you really need to adjust the image. Usually these settings are already built into the video player UI and settings.

                5 days later

Rakly3 You are the greatest employee at SLR. I would buy you a virtual beer if I know how to.

You fixed my FPS problem. I did everything you told me to do. I'm not good at computers so it took me a lot of time googling how to do everything. I didn't really see anything that was missing or wrong except that the V-sync on the 3D settings for NVIDIA was set to something like 'let the app pick" so I put it to OFF. It's been a couple of days since I did it because I didn't want to get my hopes up the first time I watched vr and it worked.

Thank You to everybody that helped me. Especially Rakly3 and fenderwq . You both wrote every detailed directions that I could follow.

I have no idea how it got turned on but I'm back baby

rerun119 the V-sync on the 3D settings for NVIDIA was set to something like 'let the app pick"

Thanks for this information. I'll ask the devs if they can do something about this.

Rakly3 I'm not positive that is what it said. I'm not sure what it said other than it didn't say ON or OFF.

rerun119 That's ok 🙂 The phrasing doesn't matter. What matters is that our app has it OFF. 🙂

                      sheldoncooper

For me, 8K has better quality, but I purchased the HEVC codec from the Microsoft store. This is the only way I can make it work if I try to install k-Lite Standart, I get lag everywhere using x265.

saskim thanks, what's your headset? is 8k real life like for you? l can play 8k vr but the resolution is too low
