mebejoe Yes, the Oculus kickstarter was before Facebook, but you're talking the difference between selling 112 thousand units and 15 million sold. You're talking about an extremely niche product and making it into a commercially viable product. And that's not just a "Oh man, this idea is so cool I will buy this crappy product," and is a legitimate, "This product is actually great at what it does," because Facebook was selling Quest 2s at a loss (of course, the data they were siphoning is more valuable, but still sold at a loss).
And 95% of people that buy into the more expensive headsets bought into the Oculus ones first because people aren't going to spend in the ballpark of near $1K on a whim. You only get to that point once it's proven to the person to be worth it. Hell, it's fair to make the case that HP and Samsung bought into the VR market because of Facebook. These brands weren't going to spend tens of millions into this entirely unproven thing on a whim either. You have Zuckerberg to thank for the non-Meta headsets you enjoy.
mebejoe Maybe Facebook $$$ enabled them to develop the subsequent products better/faster.
Yes, much better and much faster. Probably advanced the VR market by well over a decade and the VR Porn industry by the same amount as well.
This isn't to say Zuckerberg is some kind of genius, and definitely not arguing he is a good person, but don't downplay the impact of the man whose halls you stand in.
