R18 JAV site closing for good
- Edited
DRM is useless, JAV studios should know that. Their movies are pirated on the same day, so the one who gets penalized is the one who wants to pay for the content, but with DRM-free downloads.
SLR is a good example that you can maintain a digital video business with downloads without DRM.
There are many of us who want to pay for JAV VR movies even if they are available for free pirated, but we need the downloads to be able to use our own players and max image quality, streaming is a disaster, as proven with R18.
Punksxc Fanza/DMM/R18 is not a JAV studio. It’s more like a massive shopping mall of JAV studios. MOODYZ, SOD, S1, Hunter, KMP… all those major studios and so many more maintain storefronts on those sites. Like @ZENRA said, buying all of that as a catalogue would amount to thousands upon thousand upon thousands of titles. It’s beyond comprehension.

RoccoVR could you list the 120 titles you purchased
oh, they weren’t VR. R18 never made it easy enough to watch VR for me to even bother trying. SLR is the studio that did that for those of us outside Japan.
All my content is will soon to have been 2D, and mostly from 2010-2016 … my pre-VR days. Not the best quality resolution wise, but man that was JAV at its heights. Incredible women, and so very very many of them, and the shit they would do
and the doubly mind-blowing thing was there was only like ten dudes in the business living out the dream amongst the throngs and throngs and throngs of perfect tens. Just insane. so sad to see the ending of that era.

There's a whole lot of suffering all around the globe now. And that's gonna get worse, unfortunately.
But the US dollar ain't goin stop being the standard currency in my lifetime. Nothing's forever, but there's no replacement right now.
Porn is such a small percentage of all the transactions in the world, which is why the CC companies don't really care if they lose it.

I was at a legal panel recently when the speaker gave the following statistic.
"Walmart, in the USA, in a single day, processes a higher value of credit card transactions than the entire adult industry worldwide does in an entire year."

RoccoVR I have bought 30 or 40 JAV VRs at R18, but they are not in SLR because they are R18/Fanza/DMM exclusive titles. They are nowhere else. From studios such as S1 Style No 1, Premium, Madonna VR, Unfinished VR, Idea Pocket, Kawaii VR, E-Body VR, Moodyz VR...
The best JAV VR studios, by far, are Fanza/R18 exclusive. The only exception is SOD VR, which can be found here (but not the latest titles) and in other stores.
I’m another who was caught by the closure of R18. I had little interest in JAV before I found the site but my goodness that has changed. The themes and genres - oh my! Let’s just say I now believe I was born with a Japanese brain. It caters to every niche fantasy that I have.
The sales closed on the site today and it’s too late for anyone who hasn’t already been involved to get anything from it now. Having been forced to read around the other ways to access JAV I have at least discovered new avenues that will hopefully keep me supplied in future, to the detriment of my hard drive and bank balance.
A couple of tips to help, two main ones in fact:
Get a Japanese VPN connection and use Chrome. That combination will open up a lot of doors for you.
By trial and error I have realised that a lot of JAV sites are geo-fenced, and appear not to exist when accessing from a Western IP. I tried www.hhh-av.com, from a DVD cover of one of my movies. Plain directory, access forbidden. Fire up the VPN - the full Hunter site appears in all its glory.
Why Chrome? Google Translate - it will automatically translate Japanese webpages to English as you surf, no copying/pasting required. With it I can now access and browse the main DMM site.
Trying to install the DMM VR app on your Oculus? Searching in the headset drew a blank. Search on your desktop account, with VPN and suddenly it’s right there. You can then buy it (free) on the desktop then install it in your Oculus once you’ve done that. Once installed it works in the Oculus without a VPN. Of course if you can get your Oculus connected through a VPN then you should be able to do it all in VR. It’s all in Japanese but it’s easy enough to navigate your purchased videos as you can deduce what the buttons do.
Up till now I’ve been using DMM points purchased through the site with Paypal to pay for videos. I’ve no idea what barriers/solutions there are to payment on the other sites but I’m only just discovering those and there must be a way. Maybe prepaid cards can be bought.
Anyway, I hope this is useful to someone.
It's quite depressing that in order to buy legal content on DMM / Fanza, you basically have to behave like a criminal hiding behind a VPN.
Damn Mastescard and VISA, who do they think they are to become censors.
Natch As I noted elsewhere, blaming Visa and MC for the closure of R18 is like blaming a hobo farting in Seattle for causing a drought in California.
R18 went frrom millions a year USD in revenue (minimum) to this in six months because their poor staff were not given the very easy tools and permissions to fix minor compliance issues and get foreign-oriented billing.
