Meta Quest 2 Huge Price increase

doublevr $3000 why such a ridiculous high price for a piece of tech that still hasn't really taken off ? Remember people are buying the Quest for gaming not Porn and the majority of gamers prefer playing on PC , PS5 and Xbox .

Redhulk50 I did buy lot of Quest games but last 2 years its been only porn watching no games 🙂 I would definitely pay double the price if any handset claims it has double the video clarity that of Quest 2.

petermc Yes it's bizarre that he would bump up the price , the PSVR 2 is just around the corner and that will be cheaper than the Quest 2.

The price increase surprises me, it's a pr disaster, i guess they were selling it at a significant loss.

It must be selling like hot cakes because I just checked the 128 GB and it's currently unavailable.

From what I have read yesterday was the last day when you can buy the Quest 2 at the original price , I also checked some stores and its unavailable I think this has something to do with the price increase, they will no doubt wait a few days and sell it at the new higher price .

Redhulk50 My gut says stores aren't making money on the headsets. They're making bank on cases and extended warranties, though.

I've purchased at least six headsets and only used them for porn. I know a lot of gamers and even some game developers and they seem disinterested in VR games.

But you give me an idea that somebody should develop one that is geared towards watching porn and other VR videos. One that lets you calibrate for different positions and such and makes it easy to line up the body in the video with your own body, etc.

doublevr I mean Meta/Facebook as a whole. I understand the VR wing is losing money but the company, as a whole, is still making huge profits overall so they can take the short-term (hopefully for them) hit on VR.

Likely this anticipates the reveal of a less-than-stellar Project Cambria. If I were an investor in the company I'd be worried.

I was a big fan of Facebook until the day they locked me out of my account and requested a scan of my passport to check my ID. I was active from 2004 through 2020. Now I'll never support them or help them in any way.

Good product, bad company. Let's hope this opens a space for smaller companies with better ideas.

A lifetime subscription will last the rest of your life. The best you can hope for most hardware is 3-5 years.

spacepirate For sure. I just meant for the retailers themselves. I worked at a big box tech store years ago and for the devices themselves there was basically no retail markup. Pretty much all the money for laptops and computers and headsets goes back to the manufacturer. The retailers make all their money on accessories and warranty upgrades. (Our employee discount was something like wholesale + 5%, so we got no discount on laptops, but a $50 HDMI cable only cost us like $6.)

I'm not sure if I'm ready to trust the creators of TikTok with my web footprint. I don't think they could be any worse than Meta / Facebook, but they certainly aren't better. Samsung is a natural contender, since they created iPhone and iPad screens for many years and probably have the best technologies for production and commercialization. They stopped support for GearVR and reduced the resolution of their flagship phones (preferring refresh rate to high resolution). They might be a contender now that Facebook / Meta has decided against the strategy of losing money to corner the market.

got lucky...just one for kid about 3 weeks ago. i'm still using Q1...waiting on the new one coming out....hoping it will be easier to read internet websites with, as well as better porn experience

Reading will be the game changer. Many folks are currently paying for costly tech like Varjo for that very purpose. Training in VR requires two things: 1) long term usability without fatigue, hence the ridiculous price for some straps, and 2) reading potential (which entails high resolution, multi-focus, and elimination of god rays, etc).

My plan was to wait too, but the prices aren't going to improve any time soon. Refurbished might be an option.

mookiemeatball they made $7.5 billion profit in the first 3 months of this year. They’re not losing money. The VR part of the company may be losing money but, even allowing for those losses, the company as a whole is still making billions of dollars per month.
