It's more polite than terms like "obese", "fatso", "sumo-sized", "corpulent", "heavy", "portly", and "stout" (the last two being most commonly applied to men). "Far from rotund" is what your girlfriend would be most likely to accept without getting angry if applied to her somewhat-heavy friend returning from a European vacation with a little added adipose 😉
