Any Tips for Running 6K and Up Videos on My High End Rig?

I have a pretty high end PC and I have a problem I'm wondering if anybody can help me with. I almost always use the SLR app when playing videos, even my local files downloaded from other sites.

My PC has a 3080 graphics card, latest Intel i9 processor, and 32 gigs ram. It has about 8 fans in the case and ijt is liquid cooled as well. It can play the higher res videos, like 6k, 7k, 8k, fine--but--when I play them the cooling system kicks on full blast and the PC sounds as loud as a freakin vacuum cleaner! This is very distracting.

I've tried to prevent this by blowing some fans on the PC and seems to help a little, but not much.

The fans and such stop when I reduce the video to 4k. Also, the cooling system doesn't seem so noisy when I'm playing a looking file through the SLR app.

Also, besides the noise, I'm concerned that this is causing my PC to overheat and that will ultimately cause it to have a reduced life.

So, two questions:

1) Is playing the higher res videos hurting my computer by causing it to overheat?
2) Any tips for playing the high res videos without having the cooling system of the PC make so much noise?

mebejoe As far as your system overheating - unless there is something very wrong with the parts or how it was assembled, this should absolutely not be an issue. If you're really concerned and want some peace of mind, you can use a diagnostic tool such as HWiNFO to track & chart virtually every single aspect of your PC while running some 8k scenes. You can then compare your max GPU/CPU temps against what the suggested maximum temps for those parts are, and assuming there is nothing wrong with your PC you should fall well below that threshold.

The 2nd thing I would suggest (if you haven't already) is seeing if there is a way to manually adjust your PC's case fan curves and the fan curves on your liquid cooler (AIO), specifically with your case fans since you mentioned having 8 of them. The noise/volume could be something as simple as your fan curve being set to run at 100% speed when your CPU or GPU is above like 50 degrees C, which would be entirely unnecessary and overkill to the nth degree. Depending on what kind of PC you have this may need to be done in BIOS, or with certain PC's or brands you may be able to use software to check and manually adjust this. For your liquid cooler, the fan curve can almost always be done through software of whoever the manufacturer is (CAM for NZXT's, iCue for Corsair, etc.).

I would suggest starting there and seeing if it helps alleviate the issue and gives you some peace of mind haha.

While you are playing a video and your fans are going at full blast, can you press Ctrl + Shift + Esc
Go to the 2nd tab 'Performance'

Can you take a screenshot of your CPU and GPU usage?

I share your concern. I was thinking about buying an affordable 3060 i7 16GB hoping that would be good enough to experience 5K and higher, but based on your points, I would most likely experience the same thing.

Checking out other people reviews on similar products may help. It's unbelievable that someone can experience "No noise at all with fans & I'm running 3 monitors' so gamming, watching streamers, playing another game & even reading emails or watching News all at the same time." ... but the minute we try to play a measly 6k VR porn video, we don't get that same level of ease and convenience.

A few people mentioned about upgrading, making modifications like adding more fans and 360 mm cpu cooler, or buying a better AIO because the current is not enough for the i9. This seems to be the norm for those wanting to experience max PC capability.

abcrebel -- well, adding more fans and a cooler system might keep the PC from running too hot, but they are still going to make a lot of noise, no?

The only thing I can think of to solve the noise issue is to put the PC into a closet and close the door. I could actually do that. But it would require running a bunch of cables, AND of even more concern is, based on my experience, the PC would get REALLY hot in the closet.

mebejoe 4k seems fine for you, is 5K reasonable or half as loud as the higher ones or around 50% CPU usage? Personally I would be ok with that and dish out a thousand bucks to upgrade.

Wonder if AV1 codecs being smaller in size with different encoding will make any difference? Does the same thing happen if you play the 16Mbps and 30Mbps links? I have a GTX 970 i5 and just downloaded the free AV1 extension from Microsoft store. The video plays but not smoothly and is out of sync with audio, though the quality looks seemingly better ... at the expense of maxing my CPU at 100%! That is kind of nerve wrecking.

If it plays better for you with less noise, then it's just a matter of finding a h.265 to av1 converter.

Two things:

1) When using my new HP Reverb this problem is nearly as bad. If the room gets too hot, the fans kick in, but not most of the time.

2) Here's a link to the CPU and GPU usage when the fans kicked on with my Samsung. I'm not sure if this will work or not and not sure how to upload a photo here

Are you sure that your 3080 is brand new?Maybe it had goneto the gym before it came to your hands..Be aware of that... overheating and big noise two main features of mining cards
