Quest 2 Passthrough is interesting!

Anyone try the passthrough method on their Quest 2? Saw a post on the oculusnsfw reddit and decided to try it out tonight.
The black and white sucks but after going through a couple videos, I found a couple of great ones on SLR!!

The Black Box collection from PVRStudio worked really well with the passthrough! Try it out!
My favorite was with Kenzie Taylor. I think it's because she is closer to the camera which helped reduce the ghost/holographic effect. Other videos from that studio were abit hit or miss, sometimes the model is too far. Penny pax was my second choice after Kenzie.

I've only experimented with scenes that made sense while sitting on my bed (laying down but sitting up against the headboard)

The PVRStudio scenes basically made it so it was like they were sitting infront of me on my bed.

The black background makes it a green screen, and the insane lighting behind the camera helps make the model "pop" out more and reduce the transparency/holographic effect.

I think a pure white background could work also. I've enjoyed Lena Anderson's "Better late than wetter" from WankzVR. Only made sense when she was cow girl though.
I was sitting on my bed so I moved the video super low, almost eye level with her tits and the roof was white so that merged into my passthrough. The pussy eating scene was fantastic aswell because everything behind her was white.

One thing that's important to tinker around with is the positioning of the scene. The bottom half of the video has more opacity than the top. So if you're watching cowgirl on your bed and she's riding you, but her face/upper half is disappearing then I would suggest dragging the scene lower. Now it won't match 1:1 with you but it's the best fix I've come up with so far.

We are putting things together to implement the feature. Curious what has to be done in the player for the best experience

in deovr/ sleep app it works with every video but works best with videos that have black or dark backgrounds. Set up the stationary guardian. And then set up the add your couch to VR or whatever the option is called in the experimental settings. Make the couch as small as you can. During a video, Leave the stationary boundary area and go to the couch but sit outside of the couch enough to where of the room starts to blend with the VR image. And just move accordingly to get the balance of room to vr right and it will be here as if the address is in your space. This is the most important part. You have to adjust the horizontal alignment in the apps video options to get the right scaling and distance of the actress. Just play with the video settings. There are only a handful of video and have completely black backgrounds with just a singular actress. It’s a studio could get on a shooting these types of scenes more they would definitely profit from it somehow

I haven’t tried it but I often watch in the dark so it probably wouldn’t be much use to me. Also the black and white grainy image of my room in Quest 2 would be a little off putting I would’ve thought.

I like the idea of it though and would probably work better if it was a colour HD image of my surroundings.

@doublevr I have some ideas around this implementation as I have played with it a bit, and tried a few things.

First, I think it would be great to have a toggle in the settings, that would switch passthrough mode ON/OFF for the main menu background. Much like you can toggle this on the Quest home environment. This would create more spatial awareness while browsing, and generally be just a cool video watching environment on its own.

For the player, I think there is a cool way to do it, that should be fairly straightforward to implement. In the future I'm sure the studios can handle this on the production end, run software to key out backgrounds and embed occluder masks and everything will be perfect. In the meantime I think there are some achievable effects that would be worth having in the app. So ideally you would want to start with source footage that was shot on a single color background for use in AR (there may also be algorithms that can do this in Unity without a clean background) and then use chroma keying to create an occluder mask to view the passthrough. So a relatively low tech way of doing this would be a color picker to choose a color value from the video, and then a key slider to adjust the amount of keying, and finally maybe even an edge blur to soften the edges a bit. When combined with the contrast and saturation sliders, I think this kind of filtering would provide a lot of functionality and a very cool first proof-of-concept for AR video that I havent seen anyone else tackle yet. Like I mentioned though, if there is a decent way to recognize and key out human figures, rather than just color values, this may be the better approach. I dug into this a bit more last night and it appears there IS already an example available for an AR player like this available on Sidequest. It is currently limited to flat MP4 playback, and keying for only black, blue and green color values, but It works really well!
