doublevr I tried out the Oculus Quest 2 and decided to stick with the Gear VR as long as I can for a few reasons (documenting here for others who are curious):
The higher resolution of the Quest 2 made my collection of older videos with lower resolution look worse than on Gear VR (I could suddenly see with more detail how low res they were!). With Gear VR, since it's lower resolution there's a fudge factor – zooming in a bit doesn't make it blurry since it's already a little blurry.
Gear VR has bluetooth, so you can use noise-cancelling headphones (should you be so lucky as to not worry about people knocking on your door, etc.)
Gear VR has a touch control on the side of it for when one's controller isn't handy.
Gear VR can't be charged while running, but it can be plugged in to maintain power – Oculus Quest 2 can't.
Lastly, it's minor, but I prefer the rich blacks of the S9's OLED screen.
I'll upgrade once the number of 6K+ videos in my collection pushes out the old ones or when it stops working (whichever comes first).
From my testing only 6K videos, and then only some among them, were really able to take advantage of the full resolution of the Quest 2. I'm guessing it probably comes down to lighting, the quality of VR camera lenses, how close the models are, etc. at that point.
