I understand that Japan does not regulate what's okay in porn and what's not. It's more like over time (going back to the 1960s or so) it turned out that the censoring of genitals was a practical way to prevent distribution of obscene content laws being enforced, maybe similar to brown-bagging.

    Yeah it's outdated but no politicians that are willing to campaign to change that. You know how it goes

    Not to be trite, but IMHO censored is better than nothing. Compare Japanese porn production to Korean porn production to better understand the difference between censorship and outright ban.

    Won't happen for a variety of legal reasons and as others noted, the censored content is better on all fronts: better production values, better (and bigger) themes, better access to talent. Be it the small amount of VR and the immense (it's really a golden age in terms of amount being made) amount of flat/2D content, uncensored JAV almost always now is very vanilla shot on smaller nearly non-existent budgets featuring talent that more often than not is...less than stellar (beauty remains in the eye of the beholder of course).

          ZENRA ?? What is this backwards logic, you truely think their production is so much better due to the censorship? No, quality is high despite the censorship. Yes Japan is miles above other asian countries (matter of fact most countries) in terms of creativity/production value etc.

              adinihsan Abiding by the laws of the land gives one better access to tools to make bigger budget films. But perhaps you may know more than me on this subject.

                  I looked it up yesterday and tldr its due to some japanese penal code prohibiting forms of ‘obscenity’ which is vaguely worded. Idk if they looked at their productions but there is (imo) stuff much more obscene than genetalia 😆
