  • SLR please can you improve your cameras for Originals

I'm a big fan of the current Ai Passthrough scenes and the speed that they are being processed - Big thumbs up to that team and tech behind it - they are doing an amazing job.

However, for the past year or so the SLR Originals are just not what they used to be, i've mentioned this before.

Obviously i have no idea what is going on behind the scenes or what directors have come and gone and what tech they have taken with them.

But in all honesty the quality is all over the place - obviously those in the know understand that the 6k camera was the best you have ever had, and you changed to an 8k camera understandably thinking it would make image resolution better.

However this was the BIGGEST MISTAKE you ever made as the quality has never been the same since.

After this criticism from a wide variety of users, you went back to the 6k camera which sort of sorted the image quality issues, but was never quite as good, then slowly you re-introduced 8k scenes that at times looked amazing.

But now we are in a period of everything looking slightly shit, instead of woow this looks amazing.

Even VR Spy which is probably related to SLR has a pretty poor quality for a high end studio.

Please can you look into the image quality of your cameras against other websites in a headset to understand these issues.

Your SLR Originals used to be the best on the market and now i honstly think they are top 20 at most.

It's quite bizarre - please listen to feedback and make changes accordingly or don't !

I preferred the look of the 6K era SLRO content over the 8K too. Not sure if it's the camera or if they started tampering too much when editing but it looks worse despite the higher resolution.

Personally I think 8K is a great thing (if done right) and it can be a huge update over 6k, just look at what this 8K quality did for VR Bangers, so much more immersive.

fenderwq Personally I think 8K is a great thing (if done right)

Of course it's good if it's done right, do you really think i prefer 6k over 8k ?

Personally i thought that scene was the peak of when things got bad with incredibly poor scaling and fluffy resolution- - But as i say what is the point when people just won't listen untill it's too late.

Something happened around October of last year. In September SLR was on tear of their best AR PTs and then it quickly slowed down.

Silly-Sausage well people like you keep saying 6k this and that and going back to an ancient camera. It's not about reverting back to 6k it's about maximizing what you can get from 8k. That's my point. If your unhappy about the perceived resolution (which I agree with btw) at least ask for the right thing. And yes that scene I mentioned had serious scaling issues but the perceived resolution was some of the best slr has produced (I'm also not talking about reverting back to the scale issues just pointing out the difference). Besides, there are also other cameras around like the one vr bangers uses which are much better than the Canon camera.

jommy I think the scene might have been shot by the guys that shoot Taboo VR Porn. I really like there scenes. They are one of the only studios that seems to try to get better. They have come along way from where they started.
If it was them then I was little disappointed in the scene. They seemed to try good ideas but it didn't seem to work. I believe they will listen to the people and get better.

Hi. It's a funny coincidence because right after this thread was started, VRB released a remaster of Sorority Hookup 3, which I believe you directed. I really like the scene and maybe that's why I'm a bit biased, but I was really blown away by what they did with a video from 2018. To me, this remastering almost looked better than many scenes released in 2024. They even managed to make the furthest corners look sharp, like in their current productions (other studios may have excellent image quality close to the camera, but the image seems to get blurrier the further objects are from the camera).

My point is: I wonder if there's any point in discussing cameras here at all. Assuming that camera equipment in 2018 was less great than what's available today and it's possible in 2024 to make footage from 2018 look great using software, shouldn't we be talking more about post-production? Not that I have anything technical to contribute, but still...

alexnash Hello. As SchnuppiLilac mentioned, this likely appears to be a post-production issue, though I can't be certain.
Had raised this earlier, so reposting it here:

I find that the image quality has dropped as well even though the cam is 8K, it doesn't feel like it.
Sharpness/focus, overexposure and color saturation are off. I believe this adds to making the scene feel washed out and boring as well.
Just see some of the older SLR originals scenes with the lower res cam, they were well balanced.

And if we skim through recently released SLR Originals scenes, most comments raise these same concerns. Easiest way to see this would be to have a side-by-side comparison of recent videos vs older ones(more than 1 year old).
I've been using a Quest 3, so hopefully this is not a headset issue 😋

BTW, love most of your work and appreciate you coming forward to take this feedback.

        alexnash Hi guys 🌟
Les's get on top of things I'd love to hear your feedback! We probably can get technical and as creative! 🔊

First off you're my favourite director by far and filmed most of the outstanding scenes i have ever watched in VR - The Raw Taboo and Alchemy series are off the chart incredible - So for me in general it's not about your direction, positions, storylines etc which obviously can be improved but, until the technical side of things are sorted those are things that are subjective and can be worked on in future releases. The main issue for many of us is image quality.

I'm only gonna talk about your scenes as you probably have the most experience and can speak to others directors about it.

So i think most users have the opinion that the image quality has been deteriorating recently and just not as good as other high end studios - For me the current leaders are probably BadoinkVR with their recent upgrade.

I would advise you put on a Q2 or Q3 headset and watch some of their scenes which i think have incredible image quality, resolution, colour, lighting and sound at 8k.

Here are some stand out moments to watch:-

VR Bangers - Removed as they are scum

        Badoink - These look great

Recent SLR Originals - Not so good

Can you watch a few of those scenes and honestly tell me the SLR scenes are comparable image wise ?

Those particular SLR scenes seem to have a strange 'orange Hue' to them and pretty bad white balance, especially the Athena Heart scene.

Is it a new lighting rig / cam or some new post production technique or guy ? I'm just guessing... For me it doesn't look good, but with so many releases it's quite hard to put into words what and why things look bad.

I always personally thought the 6k camera looked amazing with these being highlights are possibly never bettered by SLR:-

There have been some good 8k releases by SLR but for some reason the quality of them is never stable just when i thought it was perfect, the next week is another lo-res fluffy scene sometimes with scaling issues, but scaling now seems to be resolved.

Sorry for the long drawn out post, but i want to try and get across why things aren't looking good in comparison to other companies lately and even going backwards.

So overall for me it's mainly the resolution doesn't look 8k and has a sort of fluffy, grainy feel about it and the latest scenes have what i would describe as an orangey look with poor white balance with poor blacks but you should be able to see this in a headset.

If you can somehow emulate what Badoink are creating technically / visually with you're directional superiority and story lines then that would be incredible.

Obviously i have no idea of equipment used by any company so can only give feedback from a visual point of view as a user.

Hope this is a little bit of help and constructive criticism and not meant to offend in any way - I'm sure i've missed loads that i wanted to say, but pretty sure the is enough for now 🙂

        Cheers
