Can no longer use Paypal balance to purchase

I've been using my Paypal balance for quite a while to purchase monthly subscriptions. For some reason, sometime in the last few weeks, when I try to use Paypal as payment method, it does not include Balance as an option, only credit card, Paypal credit, etc. I've got plenty in my balance and this happens when I try to purchase both recurring and non-recurring subscriptions. Does anyone know why this is? Is it happening to everyone? Is it a SLR thing, an Epoch thing, or a Paypal thing?

I don’t know whether this is just a blip as I don’t use that payment method. However most subscription models, whether they be gym memberships, streaming services, porn sites etc. all rely on a significant percentage of people just forgetting to cancel or leaving it running for months before they can be bothered to cancel. They therefore want something they can attach a recurring charge to like a credit card rather than a prepaid balance that can run out.
