Considering a Q3 but I have some questions

Hello, recently I've been thinking about getting the Quest 3. I'm not much of a gamer anymore so it will mainly be used for VR porn, where I can lay in my bed. I currently have a HP G2 and I love it, the visuals are amazing, my previous hmd was a samsung odyssey and I have never owned any of the quest hmd's. The only issue I have with the G2 is that I am stuck using it in my home office with it connected to my desktop PC. I haven't really done a whole lot of digging or research into the Q3 so I'm hoping you all don't mind answering some questions for me.

1 - Can the Q3 connect wirelessly with wifi or BT to my desktop PC in another room so I can watch my downloaded files? With my G2 I always DL the files and watch them directly from my PC for the best quality. I almost never stream videos from the internet.

2 - If I can't connect to my home pc what are my options for my library of local files? Do the files need to be uploaded directly to the hmd? If this is the case then I'm assuming the 512GB version would be the best option?

3 - Is heresphere supported on the Q3 and does it work well? I'm aware that DeoVR is SLR's favorite app but I have grown accustomed to Heresphere and prefer it.

4 - Do I need a FB or meta account with the Q3? And if so, do I need to be logged in when it's in use?

That's all I can think of for now, but I may have more questions. TIA

Edit - What are the chances of the Q3 going on sale for Black Friday or Cyber Monday?

Yes to all of your questions. As fast as Black Friday I’m sure you could prob get some kind of deal but it won’t be significant. It only came out a month ago.

Yes to all these, as long as you have a good router or mesh network at home you can stream all your files to your headset using wifi and DNLA or oculus link via air, which is their wireless version. If you run oculus link via air you can even run steam VR games or apps like Heresphere, your mileage will vary based on your router quality, your responsibility to find out what you have and if its good enough, to be safe you can always get a 6e router but even 5G has been working just fine. Also your mileage may vary based on your location in relation to where the router or routers are located. You should go to a bestbuy and try out the headset first, see the visuals at the very least and see if that works for you. There is no reason to jump on this completely blind, or better yet buy one from bestbuy try it out and return it within 14 day return window and make the decision for yourself

Thanks for the replies. My router is the DIR-3040. Since you say I can connect the Q3 to my desktop PC wirelessly do you think the 128GB would be fine for me?

I'll probably order from amazon so I can return it if I don't like it.

erniescar69 That looks like a good router. If you end up exclusively streaming your media then you should be fine. I opted for the larger storage version because I also game and download a lot of meta games on the device. Also, I would recommend setting up DLNA using a free service like Plex. Plenty of videos on youtube showing you how to do this, its very simple and so far I have not had any issues streaming the content using the DeoVR on my headset. Hell they even support PT now using this method so you should be set.

metichemsi Thanks for the help. That's awesome that Plex will work on the Q3. I already have it set up in my house to stream movies from the PC to my smart tv. I think I'm gonna wait for the black friday sales and maybe I can get the 128gb for a little cheaper, it's currently $650 on amazon.ca and hopefully it'll drop to around $600 or so. And if I like the Q3 enough I could always sell off the G2 to recoup some money.

I have a Quest 3. Virtual Desktop. It see's the computer won't connect. Tries to establish but, right back to computer name. I do have steam version on PC. also, Mcafee which i have tried to turn off. Any suggestions?

If so, turn off Mcafee. In fact, I'd uninstall it.

Yes to all of those questions. However, the free software that comes with the device is unusable. I struggled with "Oculus Link" for several weeks before purchasing VirtualDesktop, an app that will set you back $15 USD.

There won't be any BlackFriday discounts. There will be bundles if you opt to purchase the device with the charging dock (not recommended).

[deleted] Thanks for the reply. I did some googling after I read your reply and the general consensus around the internet agrees with you about the Black Friday discounts. So earlier today I pulled the trigger on a 128GB kit from amazon.ca.

I prefer keeping my files secure and private. VD has encryption.

I would have suggested purchasing the device through a local technology store. A few units have been defective, with dead pixels.

I also use it and only enable the DLNA when I'm going to watch videos. I do hate that there is no privacy with DLNA but I tried using VirtualDesktop before but it seemed to have issues projecting Fisheye VR videos. Most of them had bad warping on the top and bottom. Maybe I missed something but the fisheye 3D options kept showing greyed out

VirtualDesktop is a well-designed, safe app. I do not believe SLR content should be circulating unencrypted over the airwaves. Plex isn't designed for streaming adult content. Maybe your neighbours have children?

VirtualDesktop works perfectly for VR180 and VR200. There are no streaming problems with my setup (high 3000-series graphics card and Quest 3). However, there seems to be a problem with alpha channel transparency for large videos (my network is 6E, so it's a software problem).

Edit: Use VirtualDesktop with SteamVR and the beta of DeoVR. Install LAV filters separately and then uncheck all boxes for "DirectShow" and the alternative. Your computer will then do all the processing and the stream will run smoothly.

If you prefer Heresphere to Deo, you can stream over your network using SMB. Heresphere supports streaming over SMB for both videos & scripts.

Question - I already have paid for heresphere in Steam. Will I need to buy it again in the meta app store?

erniescar69 In the past, it was required to buy the apk again or to use the free demo. But recently, I saw that you can ask for a key for the app lab version if you had bought the apk on itch.io. So you could try by contacting HS support.

[deleted] The whole point is to use Alpha passthrough at this point so that is not a viable solution at this point. Some things still need to be figured out. Also, we dont share our network with our neighbors so they should really have no business connecting to our network in the first place. Again, I only enable it and use it when I'm actually watching content and its not always on a streaming the content 24/7 I'm sure VD will eventually offer the all in one perfect solution including all PT with full support, until then this is my setup.
