Yeah, I definitely think you're right- when censorship is required for the actual acts, you have to establish that sense of intimacy in every other available way. Think that's why JAV (in large part) often gets a lot of praise for "setting the mood", creating the atmosphere, etc.

Now that I see this thread pop up again, I'm reminded that I recently stumbled onto something really really strange. Not my thing, and I think it is animal abuse, but there are JAV bestiality videos where the girl's privates are pixilated but the animal's are NOT. So, apparently it is perfectly okay under Japanese law to show a girl giving head to a dog with no pixilation, but if she's giving a man head, it must be pixilated.

No, I am not talking about swapping their faces with some other real Japanese actors' faces -- doing so would be violating these Japanese actors' rights. Rather, we would just be making these western actors look like a Japanese (or you could also think of this as making up some fictional Japanese faces -- because these faces are totally fictional, it would not violate any other people's rights.)

Actually, this is not limited to fictional JAVs. There are also other applications. For example, if some people prefer natural-looking makeup, we could use deep learning to modify the makeup of these actors in existing videos to make them look natural. We could also just change eye or hair color if some people have some specific preference. I guess these small modifications might be less controversial.

Hosted on GitHub would allow users to change material they already physically have without causing any ripples for any studios.

Even the best deepfakes i've seen still look a bit creepy, and in vr stereoscopic image adds an extra layer of complexity. But seeing the leaps in ai generated images in recent months, it's probably to happen sooner than later

That's because replacing the face with a completely different one would be harder compared to just changing some properties. For the later, there are already some very powerful methods that can produce coherent videos. You could check out the Facial Editing section on paperswithcode website to find a few.

Yeah, that would be very interesting. However, the individual hobbyists would have limited time and resource. It would be great if some company could develop this. I think changing the face completely might cause some resistance from the studios but changing some smaller facial properties or other body parts like you suggested should probably be fine.
