Has JAV, especially VR JAV, become much more vanilla?

so over the past years ive noticed that JAV and especially VR jav seems to have become much more vanilla and "safe", very little in terms of rough action or niche scenarios anymore. this seems especially true for VR. also just less content in general.

have there been changes in law or whatever in japan that im not aware of? has the industry declined in general?

It takes around $10k to produce one movie. Not many would be doing it if they know they won't make it back

While SLR sometimes rejects some movies for compliance issues, these are pretty far and few (though some may think otherwise). The issue is probably more related to VR initially being almost too eagerly embraced by most every studio in the late 2010's. That the content on one hand was more varied, but from a technical perspective, may have been more miss than hit. The market is maturing leaving less players but with larger pocketbooks and with enough data to know that movies with more vanilla themes end up doing better (this applies to 2D as well hence 'weird' JAV always being a niche output).
