I absolutely love passthrough but the quality is sooooo much worse when natively watching on the quest 2. I have been trying to find a way for months now to be able to have passthrough actually work over the quest link. I even started trying to make my own video player with passthrough but I found out that I am not good enough at programming even with Chat GPT's help.
When will I be able to use Passthrough over Oculus Link?
mikeo609 By so much worse quality when natively watching, do you mean the streaming versions of videos in the app or does this also apply to streaming the downloaded HQ versions of videos over Wifi? I am asking because I was not aware that there is a way for Q2 to make videos look so much better.
It's not supported in Meta sdk, nor they announced any such plans

doublevr But it actually is though....

This is literally a screenshot of my oculus dashboard.
You can make the videos look much better through heresphere and the v55 update. You can supersample the highest quality videos that exist up to 2.0 times even on the quest but Heresphere doesn't support passthrough videos. To get amazing quality on PC you have to use the link cable not air link. Air Link still looks better than native on the quest 2 but you need to supersample through the oculus debug tool and the oculus tray tool. With link you can turn off the permanent center of the display foveated rendering that is making everything blurry outside of the center of the display. It's called the distortion curvature. Then with a really good PC you can supersample to ridiculous degrees. I have an RTX 3090 and I crank it until I find where I'm going below 72 fps while watching a video. You must also change the encode bitrate. I use 700mb/s. Once you make all of these changes the quest picture quality becomes sooooo much better.
Hey. Thank you for your interest.
We have tried to enable passthrough over Link but unfortunately Meta doesn't plan making that feature work for users "normally". Meta allows it to work only in debug mode (in Unity editor in our case), they will not allow apps in Oculus Store to use that feature.
Yet we keep checking this functionality from time to time if anything changes.
From the documentation:

Note: Passthrough over Meta Quest Link is a developer-only feature aimed at increasing your development speed by previewing your passthrough-enabled apps while still in development. That being said, the visual appearance and performance characteristics of the experience are slightly different between running over Meta Quest Link and running on an Meta Quest device.
