Hi guys,
Although this particular topic was inspired by @alexnash’s latest scene; “Nash Magazine”. This isn’t specific to him only. I’ve seen other producers do the same thing. I was curious to hear not only Alex’s thoughts. But the other producers and viewers as well.
I am talking specifically about tilting the camera down slightly during the intro of a scene where the male performer is standing. Where the intro goes directly into a standing BJ. There’s usually a few schools of thought on this matter.
The first being tilt the camera down slightly and go directly into the BJ without a cut and repositioning of the camera. The second scenario is having the camera level with the horizon during the intro. Then cutting, tilting the camera down, and then filming the BJ segment.
There’s no right or wrong answer necessarily. There are pro and cons to each approach. In this particular scene, Alex chose to tilt the camera down and shoot one continuous shot. The issue with this approach is the physical tilting down of the camera actually lowers the lenses closer to the floor. Giving the viewer the impression of being shorter than when the camera is level with the horizon.
Melody is (according to her bio) 5’3”. She was wearing 3 inch heels. So she was approximately 5’6” in the scene. Yet when she came in close to talk to you and later give you kisses, she had to hunch down to get eye to eye with you as the viewer. Which would put the viewer’s height in the 5’4”-5’5” range. This is a little shorter than the average male’s height (which is 5’9” according to google) And if you’re over 6’0”, the height difference is even more noticeable.
If the actress stays relatively far from the camera, it isn’t that noticeable. But if the actress gets close to the camera, the viewer height really becomes apparent. So why not just cut, reposition, continue?
Well, there is something organic and natural about going from one position to another without cuts. Those in between moments can be really hot. A girl slowly dropping to her knees. Looking into your eyes. Telling you she wants to suck your dick. Things that can get lost when you make a cut. Unfortunately, in VR, cuts are inevitable and necessary.
So my question is which approach is better? Personally, I lean towards level camera during the intro, cut, tilt down, continue. I suppose a third option could be tilt the camera down. But actually raise the height of the camera module higher than normal to compensate. That way the actress doesn’t need to crouch down.
Anyways, I am curious to hear Alex and the other producers thoughts. As well as what other viewers think.
