Video playback issue with SLR app on Daydream

I have performance issues with the SLR app when playing 4k videos on Daydream with my Pixel 3 XL. The videos never play at a smooth 60fps, but seem to playback at much less than that. Maybe 30fps or less. Video are still watchable, but framerate is less than ideal. It happens when streaming video or downloaded ones. If I were to download a scene trailer from the app and play it back in another video player (like Skybox), the video plays smoothly at 60fps. Is this a general performance issue with the app on Daydream?

One thing to note though, is that videos that can be viewed using viewport playback, seem to run smoothly. Is there any timeline when more videos will support this? It seems only a few scenes support it at the moment.

Any video/studio in particular or every video? Will test this with Pixel2, unfortunately don't have same phone as you do. 4k as in 2160p right? Does it make any difference if you would switch from h265 to h264?

It seems to be happening for every video. The SLR app caps video resolution to 1920p. If I try clicking on 2160p resolution option or higher, it defaults back to 1920p. H265 seems worst than h264. Playback performance seems to still suffer when I lower the resolution to 1440p or 1080p. Again, scenes are watchable, but doesn't seem to playback smoothly like with scenes supporting viewport encoding. Its odd since I haven't had any playback issues with 1920p or 2160p videos when using Skybox video player in daydream.

muttasan21 So what you are saying is that either 1920p or 1440p would have similar performance issues? I was testing on Pixel2 and performance was rather smooth while streaming and playing files locally. Will try to test how much frames is actually lost.

There's basically performance issues for all videos in general unless the encoding is viewport setting. I don't have any FPS counter to confirm, but it seems the only time I can get smooth and fluid playback is if the video is watch in viewport encoding (for those that support it). Since you're not seeing issues on the Pixel 2, it could be a performance issue on the Pixel 3 XL. Which is odd, since this phone has a newer processor. Could be the increase screen resolution on the 3XL, compare to the Pixel 2, affecting performance.
