  • Upscaling older VR scenes?

Anyone have any experience with upscaling old VR scenes to a higher resolution? I have been experimenting on upscaling with Topaz. I usually find an old 4 or 5k scene that I really like and make sure it's shot and exposed well. The better the source the better the render will be. I usually pick a very short section to test, because even a couple of minutes will take multiple hours, at least on my machine. I have only used GAIA which in my opinion gives me sharper results but with a slight artificial grain type of look. If the source footage is not as sharp then I will use another model.

Either way, I wanted to see if anyone else has been doing this and what your experience has been so far and if you perhaps have found different success with other methods or tools. I really think there were some real gems back in the day that were ahead of their time and I would have loved for them to have been shot in a much higher resolution, so it's nice to try and modernize some of them up to 8k.

doublevr really surprised at the turn of events on that discussion. How can anyone argue that there are no visual improvements. I guess I should post some screenshots examples to see what people think. That whole thread about no visual improvements already sounds like the argument some people were having about the canon camera having scaling issues, which is clearly not the case if used right. Something I have already provided the SLR team samples for and they are already confirming. I'll try to get some samples up to share with the team to get their feedback on that thread.

Thanks

doublevr Well, just uploaded a couple of screenshot samples on that thread. Really curious to see what the community thinks. That particular scene I chose is one of the best examples of a "low" resolution 4k scene that was shot exceptionally well compared to other 4k scenes by other studios when 4k was the standard. I personally see a drastic difference, and while some people may not feel like it warrants an upscale for the upgrade, I personally cannot go back to the 4k version once I saw the results. Also, I dont know what headsets people are using. if the resolution of their headsets is also not high, then i can see how the results might not be that impressive to start off with but I personally use a pimax 5k headset and the difference is very clear.
