First of all, thanks for being with us for two years! We really appreciate your loyalty! Obviously we want to keep our customers with us for as long as possible, we very rarely, if ever, cancel subscriptions at our end. So what has happened here?
Would you happen to be based in the European Economic Area? If so you might have been caught by the new Strong Customer Authentication rules stemming from the Payment Services Directive 2. If you have been buying something online and you have been prompted to enter a code, or approve the transaction in your banking app, that's SCA in action.
There are some exemptions, most notably for low value, (sub 30 EURO,) transactions, or for whitelisted trusted merchants. If you take out a subscription and it goes through the SCA process that also gets exempted from future checks too. For the low value transactions, once five transactions have gone through, or you have cumulatively spent 100 EUR the exemption ends.
This has been in the works for a while, but as of the 15th of October 2022 it has finally become mandatory, and like many well-meaning bits of legislation it has had some unintended consequences. Lots of long standing, low value subscriptions are about to fail, right across the EEA, right in the middle of peak season.
I hope this explains what may have happened, we definitely want you as a customer!
