well the main difference between vr porn and passthrough/ar/mr porn at the moment is that the original vr background is replaced with a shittier background. you get to see your boring house instead of some more interesting setting... and its in far lower quality too.
they could cut out the body of the male performer... but only the minority who are put off by the male performer, hands, etc really care about that.
they could potentially film with cameras all around the girl and turn it into some sort of 6 dof experience... but that isnt going to happen any time soon. still a lot of technical challenges to solve there before that could become a reality i think... and most studios cant even shoot basic vr properly today.
In 10 years we'll probably have improved immersion by being able to have more interaction and presence by the use of AR in both VR and in AR "scenes". For example by having your own body, hands etc. in the scene.
When you look at current technology such as photoshops object selection I think it wouldn't be far fetched at all that we can simply choose between VR and AR on the fly. The video could just have the proper alpha masks embedded in the video.
I think whether you prefer an AR or VR environment will remain a matter of preference. The true appeal of AR scenes is more about the feeling that this is happening to you and not some guy in the video and what can be more immersive than your own room? When you want get sucked into the fantasy and escape for a while it makes less sense though.
And who knows what the more distant future will bring. Like lightfield recordings that can be mixed and matched in any environment.
Ow and AI. At the pace this is advancing I can imagine we could generate our own ending to a scene or put ourselfs in it by supplying a text prompt lol.

Why not both?
I think they fulfil different desires and different fantasies. Some want to have virtual girls in their home (AR) others want to experience a "full" fantasy set somewhere else (VR). Maybe you watch an AR scene in the morning, and a VR scene in the evening. It's not mutually exclusive imho...
I think pass through will become more interesting when CGI and AI become more developed, when CGI becomes indistinguishable from a real person(think Varjios "meta-human" demo) the ability to have a 3D model with a skeletal rig will allow for interaction during events, and with an advanced enough AI (think the research paper from Nvidia where they trained NPCs to fight via 1000 simulated hours) it should be possible to train the model to seamlessly switch into various sex positions, then its as simple as developing a few dozen "personalities" and giving it a script. It would then be able to act out any fantasy the User would like, and if created by someone who opens up community driven content, could even have a host of Mods that could really change up the model, environment, etc.
Of course this is a a decently long way away, and who knows, if we still exist by then we may have figured out fully functioning sex robots, or something. (Brain Computer Interfaces will likely have even crazier abilities if people will be dumb enough to integrate tech that intimately)

Something about the passthrough it makes it more of a feel, imo the close up of 69, tits or face to face just feels there more of a presence there with you, and the titties and body movments seem more realistic in my environment.

sletje With AI advancements, it probably wouldnt be too much trouble to flick a switch between VR and AR. And here we are, they said it could not be done and SLR pulled through. But yeah, with Gaussian Splatting improving.... AR is the future. Its too good and affordable. Few years ago a $2700 computer and a $1500 headset could come close but now with passthrough, AI, at like $300-500 or so... yeah Gaussian Splatting with AR is the future.

spacepirate the "shittier background" isn't what makes the big improvement imo. It's the removal of the male. When you look down and you see your body that creates another level of immersion where you feel more you are in the scene. When I see some other dudes body that isn't mine that only decreases immersion and how anyone can prefer that is beyond me.
AR porn is still in its infancy. 10 years from now the amount of men seeking a romantic partner will plummet drastically.

I'm honestly shocked by the number of people wanting to stay in VR! Talk of their "boring rooms" or looking at the same space they own. All I can say is you need to move. For me Passthrough is the ultimate enhancer. The whole point is that the woman is there with you! For a start it's pretty unrealistic & unbelievable to me that I might be having sex on top of a mountain, or in space..... Silly examples I know, but the point is I want to feel like that woman is with me, where I am, where ever that may be. I don't know if some of it is also a lack of understanding especially where changing the contract etc is concerned & maybe a lot of people on Q2 in b/w rather than colour on Q3. With some videos I've managed to closely match the lighting & it's honestly felt like they were next to me. The better the lens & passthrough gets the closer it will look to reality, as in the woman is right there with you. Also if you use passthrough with cam girls you can get them to be in particular positions relative to your room, again making it seem almost real! I guess people's minds work different but for me the idea is to make it seem as real as possible & random environments don't do that. Also you have no body in VR, you're glued to some dudes chest that you know isn't yours! The only thing missing in passthrough is dynamic occlusion, once that works better your actual arms, body....(or what ever) won't disappear behind the image of the woman, at that point she's there with you. I just don't see how that's not the only answer for everyone.
First of all, if anyone enjoys AR/ MR in general and Passthrough videos in particular please enjoy them. It's all about what is fun for you in the end regardless of others opinions.
As for me, I tried everything you can imagine with AR/ MR from games to Passthrough videos (normal and porn ones) multiple times. And with their current state, I've never impressed nor attracted to anything they provided. Comparing to VR, they are just a step back, at least for me.
As for AR/ MR games in particular. I found them boring, repetitive, restrictive, incohesive, not even one game attracted me or provided a better experience for me than VR games. Actually, I never felt immersed or connected when I played them.
As for Passthrough videos. Here some reasons why I don't have any interest in them:
1- Real sex still a thing. We still can have real sex in our rooms/ homes and in our times and with attractive girls, the experience is way more sensual, so to speak, even comparing to VR porn regular videos with sex toys.
2- Not convenient. You need to adjust your position/ angle every time with every new position/ angle you see in a Passthrough video, unlike VR Porn videos which can work with all positions/ angles perfectly without involving you to do so. And no, in real life, it's just you and your woman, there's nothing to struggle with like a headset on your face, a controller in your hand and a sex toy on your Mr. Jack.
3- Not variant. All the contents are mostly the same, the same laying down position with the same floating out of place dick in your room. But that's understandable if you read the previous reason. To make it more convenient, I mean.
4- Not cohesive. The girls just don't blend, interact, scaled, positioned or angled perfectly with your room/ environment, unless you manually move and adjust your position and/ or your objects in your environment to have an acceptable experience as possible.
5- Not believable. The girls in particular, you'll either find missing parts of them like legs, belly or hair or you'll notice all of these artifact issues surrounding them like grains and visual distortions, especially in the old PT Videos, but still present even in newer videos to this day.
And I want to mention, most of these previous reasons apply to the videos with CGI Backgrounds, especially, scaling.
These are what I recall from my experiences with them. Of course, these are personal opinions/ quality tastes at least in their current state as I mentioned previously. Some don't care, some do.
Whatever brings you fun and joy, go for it and enjoy it! It's our hobby after all.
As for VR Games and Porn. VR is a dream-like experience, it's all about "escapism" and to live a different experience that cannot be achieved in real life or it's very difficult, expensive and inconvenient to achieve. And when it comes to VR, "escapism" have a positive meaning unlike its negative meaning in real life, because in VR you make an extension of your real life, to have a rest from all that work and duties you do daily.
I mean, last thing I want after I finish my work and rest in my room/ home is to still present in my room/ home. I'll either go out with my friends or dive deep in another dimension in another place and time which ONLY VR can provide of course. And this how I variant my life and make it more enjoyable.
We experienced real life in all its ups and downs, what we really need is to have more beautiful dreams. The possibilities, the new and attractive variant contents are limitless.
VR is the only technology that gives me therapy, immersion and being somewhere else in a different time period despite I'm at my home at my actual time, setting in my couch or laying in my bed.
And yes, I know I'm not there, of course I'm not, and my brain is not tricked by that, but I have that feel of "Presence" that I'm actually there.

VRXVR I hear you in certain aspects but not with others. I agree the need to use the tools alone is still a factor, a lot of people don't want to get into messing about, they just want stimulating! But what I would say from some of your comments is you've made it seem a lot harder than it is, if you're using the DeoVR app that is, and the idea that it is never that good. Yes you have to play with the tools but they're a lot better than it sounds from your post. Just the moving around is probably the most powerful tool on the DeoVR app, you have to enable it but once you have by holding the grip & trigger you can move it absolutely anywhere with ease, that feature is a must even in VR. Scaling, yeah can be an issue at times but it's getting better as developers are learning. I get some videos now that are done very well & I barely alter it. But yes sometimes you have to scale it to a point where it doesn't work perfectly, but most of that is on the studios, which is improving all the time. With a lot of the big studios these days I don't do much scaling more zooming in or out which is just pushing up or down on the joystick, not rocket science. Lastly the idea it's not that good, don't get me wrong, I've had some half women, missing legs etc 
but that was before SLR ai, now using that as long as the studio didn't blast the light (too long to explain) it's amazing! I'm not exaggerating, I've had it so close to the women in my room, like real close, and thats with meta passthrough cams which are not quite there yet. Admittedly I have Philips hue lights which I adjust for colour to offset the lighting of the passthrough cams, but even without that it's sill amazing. Other than the presence of touch we're a headset or 2 away from it being almost indistinguishable. When object inclusion comes in it will be possible for a girl to walk around you actual bed, her legs disappearing behind it (as they should), and getting on your bed. You map your room the objects are tracked and it will work, it's already here it just needs improving. I also just don't get how it's not more immersive (in the experience) how does it not distract from immersion when you can see another guys cock or when, if like me you don't have a hairy chest, all of a sudden you get a forest in front you..... Or the other way round if you do have a hairy chest. But I also understand you point about getting away from it, not everyone is lucky enough to want to be where they are and they don't need that reminder when (enjoying themselves) The point about passthrough games, I get, most stuff is crap, VR is better for most cases. There are a few things that benefit from passthrough, but on the whole most proper games have to be in VR.
I think it's difficult to tell but I think AI and future hardware will allow you to turn most scenes into either AR or VR. I would be surprised you could change location on the fly in 10 years.
What I'm more curious about is to see if we through AI (I assume) will be able to turn any scene into your own fantasy. Imagine being able to make the actress say your name, respond to you and what you say, etc. All with natural mouth movements, body and facial expressions and in your own language. You say 'look at me hun' and she does.

The difference between my comment and yours is that I'm talking about the "Current" situation, I even stated that multiple times, and you're taking about "Future" development and enhancement. With all respects, but when it comes to a comparison between different things you have to build your argument around the "current" situation, not on other future situations that may or may not become a reality.
Yes, developments and advances in tech will always coming and enhance and level up that certain tech. But until that happens you have to stick to the current facts. So, no, I didn't make it look harder than it really is. At least with my experience with it.
Also, I don't see how is it different of being another person in VR with hairy chest or not vs. a floating dick in my room. In the end, they are both distracting. I rather be another totally different person as long as he's more coherent with the environment than looking at out of place floating dick crowding with my Mr. Jack. lol. Especially if you use sex toys, last thing you want is to see them, both just break the experience. So, no, Passthrough is not immersive at all, no matter what you do, at least for me.
