  • Video Quality on Quest SLR App and Windows SLR App

Hey Folks, I was wondering, if there is a difference between the Videoquality if you play SLR on the Quests SLR App or if you connect the Quest via USB and take the SLR Windows app? How do I get the best possible Imagequality on my Quest?

Ssiebert204 On a pure technical level, yes there is a difference. Not so much because of the app, but because of the difference in decoders on each system. - In practice, it is subjective to what you prefer. It's even different between the Quest 1 and Quest 2 and any other headset because of the difference in displays.

If you are using the Quest 2 it is negligible as you can adjust the settings to your liking and can use the same file quality as on PC. For the Quest 1, PC can use higher quality video files.

If you watch on the Quest2 the Quest2 is playing the video and directly displaying it.
If you watch over USB, your PC is decoding the video and this then somehow must get over on the Quest 2 to display.
And unfortunately the Quest2 has only USB, and with USB well I mean the USB protocol. Type-C actually would allow directly transfer the image via Displayport alternate mode, but unfortunately it is not implemented, and USB does not have enough bandwidth for this.

So the image then gets encoded again, to fit into the limited bandwidth of USB and transfered to the quest. This inevitable introduces additional latency, which does not matter that much for videos, and reduces quality.

So watching videos directly on the quest will always have the higher quality, and obviously the lack of a cable is much more comfortable as well.

ibins Is pcvr better than standalone vr as for the pictuer quality?

For gaming? Yes PCVR is miles ahead, when you have your beefy GPU making the image instead of what is essentially a small smartphone SOC.

For watching videos no, unless you have a video that is too much for your standalone headset to decode, but you can decode it on your PC.

Hey guys, someone else here not sure what to use best 🙂 ?

Because I really do think (I am using the Pro and a 2070ti) that the little bit of imrovement of sharpness increases the immersion in a noticable way. Most of all if the girl is a metre away - it is just better ! Can't even archive that with the sharpness setting on the Quest app (moreover the frames drop then).
Of course it is more comfortable using Quest natively ... :-) And the passthrough option ...

If someone here's using that setup - would really appreciate to let me know what you think :-)

Indeed, there may be differences in video quality and decoding capabilities between different VR headsets, including the Quest 1, Quest 2, and other systems. Factors such as display resolution, decoding capabilities, and settings can impact the overall video quality and performance on a particular headset.

The Quest 2, for example, allows users to adjust settings to their preferences and can handle higher quality video files, while the Quest 1 may have different capabilities due to its hardware specifications. Other VR headsets may also have unique characteristics that can affect video quality and performance.

It's important to consider the technical specifications of your specific VR headset and the settings you use when comparing video quality between different devices. Experimenting with different settings and file types may help you find the optimal video quality for your particular headset and preferences.

Sorry, if I wasn't exactly enough - I didn't mean the comparisation of headsets but the difference (in sharpness) when using Quest Pro natively or Quest Pro with Oculus Link.
