The specs and early reviews are in and Quest 2 is going to be spanked, and not in a good way, by Pico 4. Recently ByteDance, the makers of TikTok, purchased Pico. The Pico 4 headset offers at a price less than Quest 2 almost all of the cutting edge tech of the Quest Pro (Project Cambria). One can only wonder how Pico developed a clone of the Quest Pro, but the product has a lot of impressive specs.

quest2 owner here and like many people am very ready for an upgrade and i think this year they screwed up. I was surprised to see pico release neo 4 for so cheap $420 euro and imo what they did is smart. They created a non pro model without face and eye tracking for cheap. And i like many dont care about face tracking and much rather spend less on a headset without it.

FB on the other hand seem to be only releasing a pro model with face tracking for what seems to be $1500. They should have created also a cheaper consumer model without face tracking which i and many would buy in a heartbeat. Consumer priced gaming focused headset is where most of the market is. Instead just this pro model coming out that is very expensive and out of most peoples budget. People have to wait for quest 3 which god knows when will come out and Now pico will be ahead of the game releasing a headset with much better specs than the quest2 and for the same price.

Will i buy the pico? prob not since its a chinese owned and is lacking on software side. But man fb screwed up for not releasing now also a next gen consumer priced headset

    @doefi3

Pico 4 has comparable specs to Cambria / Pro minus the eye and face tracking (used by businesses mainly for VR meetings or highend gaming where eye movement triggers render quality).

Pico 4 will be released now at a time when many want to transition from cellphone tech, the Go, or Quest 2 to a new HMD.

Meta will need to cut those prices down ASAP.

Folks who'd give their data to Meta to save money on a headset will be equally willing to give their data to TikTok / ByteDance and the CCP.

    my thoughts...

    • marginally higher resolution lcd... meh... still lcd so it doesnt improve the biggest problem which is poor black levels. the higher field of view will offset the resolution increase so chances are that it wont look any better than the quest 2.
    • no 120 hz = less smooth playback of 60 fps videos.
    • pancake lenses... cool... thats a noteworthy improvement.
    • motorized ipd adjustment... meh... you only need to adjust headset ipd once anyway so it doesnt even need a motor.
    • must be aimed at males in asian countries with that ipd range.
    • xr2 chipset... same as quest 2... except that its almost 3 years old at this point and something better will arrive imminently.
    • 45% bigger battery than quest 2 but battery life is roughly the same... more power hungry and less optimized.
    • tracking will be worse than quest 2.
    • RGB camera... not sure how useful that will be.
    • system software will definitely be worse than quest 2.

basically a quest 2 clone with a couple of improvements and some retrogression... but 2 years too late

rgb camera actually think will have great use, color vrporn passthrough!
saw some reviews on the pico tho that it has some distortions. Future quests rgb camera should be better

i like also that its more lighter and comfortable than quest2. The Pancake lenses should make the biggest difference in quality i think. Thing i really hate about the quest 2 is god rays and tiny sweet spot.

deffintly feel temptation to pick one up but software is tho such a huge factor in experience and the thing thats holding me off from buying it.

Really hoping for also some pleasant surprise from fb connect next month, otherwise they gonna loose alot of the market i think

I dunno. We won't see it in the US so specs and pricepoints are irrelevant. Plus, Quest users are locked into the format/brand unless they have purchased their games through Steam.

Don't they also have their own developed OS? Depending on popularity and/or OS restrictions it could be that it will receive little or no support from SLR.

does anyone know why the IPD range is translated to a range WAY larger than quest2? I have an IPD of 56 so was hoping for new devices to potentially have a more inclusive range but this is WAY different than i was expecting

edit: reading more in the thread, seems what @spacepirate mentioned would explain the change.

If you want to get a new headset, pico seems to be the obvious choice, at least as good or better then Quest 2 in every aspect, and slightly cheaper.
But certainly not worth an upgrade.

Indeed, the problem right now, though, is that most folks don't have enough money to get a new headset at any price and those who do have lots of money for the most luxurious options available. A combination of COVID-19 policies, the Green Movement, and vast spending on war, all taken from tax and through savings from Inflation, mean that there's not much of a market for mid-range these days. But the Pico 4 is a great sign that either Meta must cut prices to stay in the game or bow out of VR.

You can download the videos for any machine.

I don't use meta's games. For me, a headset is a TV replacement for watching classic film and occasional appreciation of VR porn, because for VR180 porn companies like SLR are doing more innovative work than most producers of non-porn content.

Still waiting for a successor to my Reverb G2 in the same price range...this isn't it.

think im just gunna wait for quest 3 and hope im not priced out of it

Not enough of an improvement over Quest 2 for me to buy it as an upgrade. If I were a first time buyer though, it would definitely give me food for thought as to whether I’d go for this over the Quest 2.

Look at what's going on in America, if that's where you are ... No one in the news is talking about the Strategic Oil Reserves. For the past few months the gas prices have been kept artificially low for the upcoming American midterms. After the midterms there will be a major crash. Prices are going to skyrocket because it will be next to impossible for the Americans to maintain their supply chain. Most goods that they purchase are delivered by trucks, cars, or some form of gas-based vehicle. Heating costs are going to go sky high (remember that war in Ukraine? When Putin shuts down that pipeline to Germany the Europeans will need energy from somewhere). I don't have a good headset, but if I had the money I'd buy one now. Things are going to get lots more expensive, for Americans and countries, like mine, linked to their economy. Expect lots of economic migrants from literal starvation. Buy stuff today because your money won't go as far tomorrow.

[deleted] damn G you scaring me, I'm just trying to watch sum hotties! Lol

Better watch all I can before my electricity goes out or we get hit by something that kills us all, sheesh 😟

In the uk we have been forced to wank away the fear of the immenent economic collapse, after all the government and power companys cant take our money if we already spent it on a headset, toys and scripts.

Watch porn until the power goes off! New strategy for the UK. QE2 would approve.

Apologies for the dark observation, but the advice is honest. Buy stuff now cause tomorrow the price goes up.
