Should l buy meta quest 2 now?

l've been thinking about buying a high-end helmet quest2 is a good choice but it was released two years ago.Maybe the next generation of meta or other better ones will come. so should l buy it now or wait ?

innol don’t know what’s coming down the pipe but, as far as I’m aware, even with the extra $100, it’s still miles cheaper than pretty much anything else out there. It’s also a standalone headset so you don’t need a high end PC to use it which is the main reason I bought one. I got one at the cheaper price last year but it would still have been worth it at a $100 more. Only issue is that you end up having to pay out for a new strap (the one it comes with is awful), you’ll probably end up buying a new facial interface too. If you wear glasses, you may also shell out for prescription lenses as well. You can use it with glasses though.

Facebook / Meta added $100.00 USD to the price tag of Quest 2 just last week. I wouldn't hold my breath for the imminent release of Quest 2 Pro (i.e. Project Cambria) in a few months. But another company might release a headset soon to displace Quest 2 as top of the line. The increase in price does make some of the other systems look more appealing.

petermc Thanks Have you ever tried to play the slr original (50-80GB size) with quest2 ? How's your feeling about quest2 ?

I’ve only tried them on Skybox which is not SLR’s own player but they work ok, not sure it’s perfect but not watched them a lot. The problem with files that size and watching them through Wi-Fi from your laptop to your headset is that they do buffer a lot unless you have super fast Wi-Fi so you just end up streaming the version on DeoVR. Not sure I see a huge difference though from the streaming version to the super big file version. I’ve not tried the new 8k scenes on Skybox but they don’t have a 190 degree option (don’t know why SLR insist on fisheye and on 200 degree/190 degree view when the industry standard is 180 degrees and non-fisheye).

I don’t know what you are using now and Quest 2 is the only VR I’ve ever known so I can’t compare it to anything else. I just know that it made it financially viable for me at last to get involved in VR as the headset was affordable and I didn’t need a super expensive PC to run it.

Quest 2 Pro aka Cambria just got confirmed for an October release so I'd hold off and wait to see what the specs/price is

spanker They set this high price because of its augmented reality and facial tracking, they think this two features make it a high-end headset but there is no great improvement in resolution and hardware(still xr2).Maybe the meta is on the wrong trajectory , people emphasize resolution and chip more cause most people use vr to watch not to socialize.

Sad really that they seem to have given up on making VR accessible to the masses if this price is correct for the Quest. The knock on effect is that it will stay a niche market for porn and nothing will change, we’ll keep getting the same boring stuff.

Making a VR headset at a similar price point to a video game console made it expensive but affordable to most people. The only people, generally spending $1500 on a VR headset are rich people or tech nerds as VR had always been previously.

Well, not to point out the obvious but the price increase is tied to inflation which is tied to American policy decisions. People in various countries of the world are literally starving to death from the same decisions made by American politicians, and they didn't even have a vote to reject the policies in question. It's sad. It's disheartening. At least you have a say in your destiny.

so many people this winter will simply sit in their homes freezing, I don't know how much energy is used to charge my Oculus Quest 2 and how much to keep on my internet wifi ,

Yeah...that is definitely quite the jump in price for sure. Very curious to see if there will be an "in-between" released as well in the near future. Even if it's balls-to-the-wall awesome, $1500 is definitely out of many people's affordable range.

Im interested to see the workaounds to get the psvr 2 working on pc, though with the moves Sony are making into PC gaming it wouldnt surprise me if works on pc straight out the box.

With the price points of the newer high end sets ive started to change my mind and begining to think it could be a real contender, but only if its only useable with something other than the browserless ps5.

And it's poorly designed for multimedia purposes... It's not designed to watch videos or play games but to replace a monitor, which it won't be able to do if the leaked specs are right.

The battery is at the back of the headset, so you can't rest on a bed to support the weight of the headset. It's probably lighter than Quest 2, and better counterbalanced with the battery and support strap for desktop usage. But it's not a headset for watching films, and will be way overpriced at first. Maybe some users will upgrade up and there will be low cost second-hand Quest 2s on the market.
